Hi! I've a DB-dump file of 450 MB that I need to edit. When I open the file JEdit complains of insufficient Java heap memory (I know that I can adjust the heap memory size). I would like JEdit to be able to open files of almost any size without the need to change the Java heap memory size. I think some editors open big files by opening a part of the file. This would be my #2 most wanted feature!

I agree that this is a very important feature in an editor.
But I also think that jEdit has to manage big files better anyway. If I open a ~1M file, the heap usage goes up by 10 megs, and I cannot push it back down after that (even worse -- the max. heap goes up even more).
So I think it needs a bit more work in this area. Keep up the good work!

This is what I am missing most. The only reason for keepeing UltraEdit on my Windows box is its ability to deal with really big files (e.g. >2G).
If this could be implemented, maybe by switching off features like "undo".....

Hi, I have discovered jEdit recently, it is a great editor
that is able to substitute UltraEdit on win platform,
but like above comment i can't remove it because on my work
i need to open text file about 3-4 hundreds megabytes and jEdit fails.
Please give me/us this beautiful gift as soon as possible.

I have to agree. Even with 2 gig of ram installed I still run into memory problems with some of the files I need to work with. This is the number one feature I would request along with dynamic memory allocation.

Maybe it is possible to request only a portion of the file be opened.
