Windows context menu not working
Submitted by abunai on Sunday, 2 May, 2004 - 19:45
Hello -
I am having trouble using the context menu in windows xp to open a selected file. When I highlight a file, right click it, I can see the option "Open with jEdit". When I select this, jEdit opens, but not the selected file. The last open file seems to be the one that is displayed. I also found that jedit is unable to open files from the command line ex. "jedit textfile.txt". The only way I can open a file is the open dialog with in jedit. Any ideas?

Not sure why that should be. I tried it on my version (4.2pre11) on XP and it works fine. What version of jedit are you using?

Have you tried looking at the activity log (Utilities-Troubleshooting) to see if any errors are occurring as you try to 'open with'?

Given that you say the command line
jedit textfile.txt
opens jedit but not the file, I'd say it looks like the problem is with your jedit install, rather than it being XP specific.

Does the problem occur if jedit is already running when you do the 'open with'? (i.e does jedit just seem to ignore the request, or actually respond in some way?)

Possibly a plugin is failing and getting in the way?
What about trying this:
* Close Jedit
* Rename your jars directory (in the .jedit dir or equivalent) to something like jars.skip
* Try doing the "open with"

see if jedit now opens the file.

If it does that would suggest a plugin is getting in the way. Remember to exit jedit and replace the new 'jars' directory that jedit will probably have created with the jars.skip directory back to 'jars' afterwards!

Same problem

I just tried deleting my .jedit directory and uninstalling jedit (4.2pre12) on Windows XP and I'm having the same problem. The context menus don't work at all. Also, typing "jedit foo.txt" from a CMD prompt only launches the app & doesn't load the file.

It's a known bug with jEditLa

It's a known bug with jEditLauncher, which is not currently maintained.
