jEdit 4.2pre13 now available

jEdit 4.2pre13 is now available for download. This release fixes the infamous ClassCastException on startup, as well as a number of other bugs.

I'm using jedit on NT 4.0 SP 6.

I upgraded from 4.2pre9 to 4.2pre13 with no problems. Everything seems to be running great with one exception.

We have networked drives (samba on HPUX) and some of the directories have a large number of files in them. File access to any file in these directories is frustratingly slow.

Before the drives were networked I used the FTP feature (and continue to do so). This works because the directory is not read for each i/o operation. A manual refresh is required to read the directory information. Accessing from samba with large directories causes each operation to momentarily hang up with 'loading' in the File System window and 'I/O: 1 operation in progress' in the status window.

It takes over 50 seconds to traverse to one of these directories in the File System window. The traversal is almost instantaneous in Windows Explorer. According to explorer, there are 396 files totaling 358M.

The problem was also present in pre9 but I only had FTP access so I didn't really notice until now.

I am also having nearly the same problem. I am programming php over ftp. It takes 30 seconds before a file has been saved. Even though I just made a connection to that server.
Does anyone know how to increase this speed?

I have the same problem since early versions of Jedit and never figured out whats going on Sad

Access to samba shares (on linux) from Jedit on WinXP/Win2000 is very SLOW.
No matter which Samba version or Java VM I use, it's the same.

For over a year now I still feel extremely happy with jEdit. I was caught also buy the 4.2pre12 bug and tried other solutions (Komodo, Zend) but happily returned to jEdit. It work with it under Windows and Linux to the greatest satisfaction.
Therefore , I would like to congratulate you guys for the fantastic program you deliver. Keep up the good work.

FTP plugin: SFTP not working

I wasn't able to use SFTP anymore but FTP still ran fine.
I fixed it by removing the old j2ssh jars (j2ssh-common-0.2.6.jar, j2ssh-core-0.2.6.jar, SSHTools-j2ssh-0.1.7.jar). Now it works again.

FTP don't work for me (WinXP). After clicking on connect to ftp server I obtain

Cannot start: java.lang.NoClassDefFound: org/apache/log4j/Layout
Try updating to a newer version of he plugin.

I completely reinstalled this plugin thru plugin manager but it still doesn't work.

Looks like you are missing the Jakarta Commons files. Are those installed on your system? (you should see Jakarta Commons in the plugin manager)

I will work with my computer soonest on Friday but I believe that I have Jakarta Commons installed because they are needed with XML plugin which I use.

BTW, XML plugin is still buggy - validating against DTD doesn't work if the path contains "strange" characters like diacritics (I work on czech Windows)

Won't install on Windows NT4

I'm using JEdit on Windows NT4 SP6. I've had no problem installing earlier versions (eg, 4.2pre10,11) but pre13 won't install. When I activate jedit42pre13install.jar I get an error message, "Could not find the main class. Program will exit!" I get a similar message when I try to "java -jar" from the command line. This doesn't happen with jedit42pre11install.jar or jedit42pre12install.jar. Any ideas on how to fix -- or is the distribution jar a bit stuffed?

Won't install for me on Windows XP Pro either

I was getting the same error, I fixed this by moving the installer file directly under my c: directrory. I was trying to install it from my 'My Documents' directory, which contains a space. I think that the bug is that the installer cannot handle spaces in the classpath directory, so moving the installer to the c: directory should fix the problem.

Nope, that didn't work for me. I tried it from c:\, d:\. I tried downloading it again a number of times. I tried downloading yet again with virus checking turned off. Still doesn't work.

classCastException

This version seems to be good and stable, but I have a problem with ClassCastException when using the "paste previous" feature. It first appeared in 4.1 yesterday, then I upgraded, hoping the error would go away, but it didn't. Any idea how to fix this?

Is there a problem with the CodeAid and/or Jane plugin(s)?

I'm using jdk 1.5beta and CodeAid freezes the input (i.e. can't use the keyboard anymore - menus still work) after popping up a list of completions.

I don't know if this happens with jdk < 1.5.

On a related note: Are there plans for CodeAid to use the services of the Java Core plugin (classpath)?

jedit vs JDK runtime version

I am using jedit 4.2pre13 to edit Java 1.5 sourcecode (gxparse.sourceforge.net), and had the same problem. jedit runs fine in JDK 1.4.2. I use a shell script to run jedit in 1.4.2, and use Java 1.5 for everything else.

The plugins work fine on 1.4.2 source code, but not on 1.5 code that uses generic types. I'm looking forward to the time when the plugins will have been updated to Java 1.5.

jedit is a most excellent editor.

The doc is divided between .app items, and misc items. If you drap a jar file to the right side of the vertical divider, on the side with the trash icon, it will stick.

You can use the jEdit.app from one of the previous versions. The Application Package of jEdit is referencing the jedit.jar outside of the package. So just copy the .app into your pre13 installation root.

Help increasing jedit memory on OS X?

I am launching jEdit 4.13 from the dock - what do i need to edit to cause jedit to run with a larger RAM allotment?

In the jEdit help files it is stated:
"One solution that often works is to set or increase the allocation of memory to the heap for Java objects created by the Java Virtual Machine in which jEdit is running. Add the command line option -mxXXm to the options passed to the version of the Java application loader you are using (such as java, java.exe or javaw.exe). In place of the XX in the option, use a multiple of 16 between 32 and 128. If you already are using the option, increase the numeric portion of the -mxXXm parameter in increments of 16. Many users have good results using 48 or 64, but you should try different values for the best result on your installation."

...how do i apply this to OS X? I tried some edits to info.plist within the package, but i must have got the syntax wrong because jedit would no longer launch. Sad

You want to edit info.plist in the package contents directory.

Add another sibling under the Java element.

Property: VMOptions
Class: String
Value: -Xms768m -Xmx1024m

The accepted values for the -Xms (startup) and -Xmx (maximum) memory
allotments are documented by Apple. Can't seem to find the bookmark at
the moment. The above values set to 768MB startup and 1024MB (=1GB)
maximum RAM for jEdit. I've lots of RAM, you may want to set the values
lower. I don't recall the multiples in which they must be assigned, check
the Apple docs.

Got me initially, too. The jEdit docs aren't very helpful in this regard ...
