Where is jEditLauncher???

Hi,

I just downloaded and installed 42pre14. I upgraded from 4.0.3, and I notice there is now no windows EXE.

This FAQ Item (http://jedit.org/FAQ/installation.html#id2877328) refers to JeditLauncher, but I don't see anything like this in my install directory, and I don't see any exe's.

What am I missing? I need to have an exe so I can set up right-click sendto and associate files and such.

I was OK with using .bat files and registry modifications, but there are cases where those approaches don't work so well.

For example, the fine archiving software, 7-zip (see sourceforge), requires an .exe file for the default Editor. No .bat files. So your program does the trick.

Appreciated this.

If anyone wants to try 4.3pre1 with a new jEdit Launcher, there's an experimental windows installer here (with an experimental jEdit Launcher):

I've been using it, but other than that, it hasn't received much testing, so some would be appreciated.

Just wanted to say that I've been using jEdit from your installer for a while now and it's been very stable for me. Thank you for your work.

I've also been using your installer to evangelize coworkers (most of whom are still using notepad!?).

Is there any talk of incorporating your installer into the official release?

I've got a licence for the exe4j programm and may distribute any launcher-exe files that I create without restriction.
As creator of the jedit.exe I license it under the GPL.

By the way
it tries to find a JRE 1.3 or higher in the following sequence
windows Registry
JAVA_HOME
JDK_HOME

I could add more environment variables or directories if needed.

it also allows passthrough VM parameters
e.g.
-J-Xmx256M

This has some answers

I installed a version of this jEdit a month or so ago on a WindowsXP machine. It worked just fine. Now I do the same with the latest version on a new machine and it's all screwed up.

Instead of whining about having to answer the question all the time post some warnings up about the radical change in the way it installs. The new installation instructions are worthless and don't achieve the same results as on previous installs.

I know this project is your baby but as we all know, when developing software an application is either a reliable tool, or a buggy timewaster. Now that we all have antivirus, antispyware and firewall software butting in all the time clear and simple installs are tricky enough.

Sorry to insist, but it's the first installation here, so I don't have any previous version.
I run a Win98se and the 4.2pre14 version has no launcher, no quick launch icon, no program menu and no shell integration.
A frind has the same problem on Xp.

Using shortcut to start Jedit

One way to start Jedit without Jedit Launcher is use a windows shortcut:

1) create a shortcut on the desktop.
2) Edit the shortcut properties as follow:
- in the "target" box, depending on the location of your jre, enter something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\javaw.exe" -classpath %CLASSPATH%;jedit.jar org.gjt.sp.jedit.jEdit

- in the "start in" box, depending on the location of your Jedit installation, enter something like this:
"C:\Program Files\jEdit 4.2pre14\"

The shortcut will start Jedit using your system classpath.

Is's madnesss not to include the launcher of Jedit for windows anymore. It simply means the death of Jedit on the windows platform. I have been using Jedit for over a year, but I am now seriously considering abandonning it and going back to the proprietary UltraEdit.

1) Bring up command prompt. Type:

ftype txtfile="c:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_05\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "c:\Program Files\jEdit\jedit.jar" -reuseview "%1"

Obviously replace the java path and jedit path with your paths.

2) Next, in command prompt, type
assoc file_extension=txtfile
where file_extension is the file extension, including the preceding "." that you want to associate with jedit. For example, to associate java files type,
assoc .java=txtfile

Done.

Easy to do without the launcher. On my system I just put the following line for the file associations:
"C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "C:\Program Files\jEdit\jedit.jar" -reuseview "%1"
and it works like a treat.. double click...

I've just re-installed pre13 (which brings the launcher with it) and unchecked everything except the jeditLauncher. Afterwards i installed pre14 in the same dir. done Eye-wink

It also works if you install the jEditLauncher component of a previous version over the already installed jEdit program directory. Be careful to deselect everything else.
Anyway, I disagree with the stripout of the launcher from the package because it causes more inconvenience to the users used to shell integration than the bugs it contains. Anyway I didn't notice any kind of bugs using it.

I'm not sure my problem is exactly the same: I have installed jEdit under windows XP as administrator, but can't start it from a non-administrator account. I get the errormessage "The jEditLauncher component does not appear to be installed. Do you wish to install it now?" What to do?

I also regrets that it has been removed from the distribution as it was useful to edit the file.
Now when I use java -jar jedit.jar "%1", I have files opened as c:\HELLOW~1\HELLOW~1.JAV instead of c:\helloworld\helloworld.java and of course all the indentation and colorisation is gone as the extention is .JAV

I think that the problem comes from the administrative rights. I always installed it without problems but now I don't have the administrative rights on my Win 2K and I saw this message error.

I want to add my 2 cents. I concur with the posts above, though the more technical will find a way to manually edit the registry, create batch files, create custom helper exe's, ect, the common windows user looking for a new editing program will not accept this program if they can't simply double click a text file and have it open in Jedit.

In a conflicting opinion, I can see why the exe was removed as it defeats the java spirit of things. However, without smooth Jedit integration into any environment, Jedit and all it's glory suddenly becomes more difficult and therefore less desirable to use.

I added a start in front of it to get the dos box immidiately closed after double clicking on a file. So my jedit.bat is now:

A simple jedit.cmd file should contain this:

start "JEdit" "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_06\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "C:\Program Files\jEdit\jedit.jar" -reuseview %*

The start command uses the first parameter in double quotes as title for the cmd window.

I would first like to say that as a programmer I hate noobs. Most of you just wanted something, looked for 2.5 seconds, and then complained. Actually spend time to look for what you want and get it. I installed jEdit 4.2 with the WINDOWS installer. This includes everything necessary to add 'Open with jedit' to the right click event of EVERY file. If you want to double click on a text file and jedit to be the default, well then follow the advice listed here.

Also, be wary that jEdit 4.2 defaulty opens Microsoft Visual Studio files on some machines. This is NOT a jEdit problem, but actually a Microsoft problem. Due to soft coding of the default opening program for those file types, jEdit is actually the default.

And here is an EXCELLENT program to fix all your file type associations that Microsoft screwed up. WAssociate

Fixed my friends association problem and can also be used to make jedit your default txt file opener. Enjoy!

Oh and use www.google.com and search for some of this stuff before you complain noobs.

I too am a programmer, and i dont share your arrogant mindset. Taking away functionality from a previous release will introduce unnecessary problems and frustrations, and will cause people to either stick with the previous release or use another editor (Congratulations). A Programs purpose is to help a user perform a task, making it harder for them to achieve that task (for the sake of 'the spirit of java' is absolutely ridiculous). It is still a program and if it is possible to make it more convenient/productive to use, then it should be done.

Were not talking about including 'new features', this is a fundamental requirement for all applications (because thats the way every other application on the OS behaves).

Why the hell should thousands of users suffer or care if the programmer chose to write their program in Java?

I'm not a programmer in any real sense -- not since about 1994 under RISC OS -- and haven't had any problems so far.

Two points:

a) "thousands of users" aren't required to upgrade, and
b) there's a launcher available that works well.

If people can't wrap their heads around that, an editor that doesn't even use a friendly tabbed MDI as standard might not be for them. jEdit's great for those of us who have a need for it -- who are also people who can work out how to use it -- but it's overkill for the average user.

For those who still do not know to get an "Open with jEdit" entry in the context menu of every file:

create a file, let's call it jEdit.reg, with the following contents (between, but not including the ---------):

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\jEdit.exe]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\jEdit.exe\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\jEdit.exe\shell\edit]
@="javaw.exe -jar \"C:\Program Files\jEdit\jedit.jar\" -reuseview \"%1\""
--------------------
Then run this file by (double)clicking on it. The system asks if you really want to enter these data into the registry. Yes, you want.
That's it.
N.B: this assumes that javaw.exe is in your path. If not, prepend the full path of the directory javaw.exe is in to javaw.exe.
N.B: this assumes also that you have installed jEdit into C:/Program Files/jEdit. If you have installed it soemwhere else, change this path accordingly.

The nice thing is: you can do this with other editors as well (I started doing this for vim), and you can easily take this file with you to other computers you work on. Saves you the hassle of clicking and scrolling a lot in regedit.
