No "Tilde" possible in jEdit
Submitted by Anonymous on Thursday, 29 July, 2004 - 09:10
Hi,
im using jEdit for a few days now and I must say the developers have been doing a really good work on it. But I have a strange problem which makes the editor almost unusable for me: I can't enter the "tilde"-sign (~) in the text window, although it works in all of my other applications.
I'm using version 4.2pre15 on a Debian Sarge system and Java RE 1.4.2.

Any Hints?

Greetings from germany,
Daniel

Affects Windows as well

My tilde works neither in the buffer nor in the keyboard tester, which gives me this (on my Finnish keyboard, I need to push Alt Gr to get the tilde, that's why there are the first and last two codes as well):
  • Event KEY_PRESSED,keyCode=0x11,keyChar=0xffff,modifiers=0x2 passed
  • ==> Translated to C<11,0>
  • Event KEY_PRESSED,keyCode=0x12,keyChar=0xffff,modifiers=0xa passed
  • ==> Translated to CA<12,0>
  • Event KEY_PRESSED,keyCode=0x87,keyChar=0x7e,modifiers=0xa filtered
  • Event KEY_RELEASED,keyCode=0x87,keyChar=0x7e,modifiers=0xa passed
  • Event KEY_RELEASED,keyCode=0x11,keyChar=0xffff,modifiers=0x8 filtered
  • Event KEY_RELEASED,keyCode=0x12,keyChar=0xffff,modifiers=0x0 filtered
I use Windows XP Service Pack 2, jEdit version 4.2 final, and Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0. I tried that MacOS workaround to be safe, but it didn't help. The other two functions of the button (normal - umlaut and shift - caret) work just fine, just tilde doesn't. Also, all other characters which require Alt Gr to be outputted have no problems. And it's a pain to use the Character Map, since in C++, for instance, ~ is used in just about every class (for the destructor function).
Accent Plugin may cause some problem.

Accent Plugin may cause some problem.
If Accent is Enabled ~A will be converted in to à symbol. If that the problem you are facing try Plugin->Accents->Enable Uncheck the MenuItem.

IF this dosent help

2nd thing you might want to try is to Util->Troubleshooting->Keybord Tester...

try entering the ~ in the dialog box. and post the output for further analysis of you'r problem

The accent plugin is not installed and therefore obviously doesn't cause the problem. This is the only output I get from the Keyboard tester:

Event KEY_RELEASED,keyCode=0x209,keyChar=0xfe53,modifiers=0x0 passed

In contrast to Sjmielh, the tilde doesn't appear in the keyboard tester window. Very strange problem.

Thanks for replying,
Daniel

Same problem here, but I use jEdit pre15, MacOS X.3.4 and java version "1.4.2_04"; Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_04-135); Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-36, mixed mode)

In the keyboard tester the tilde appears and I get this output:
Event KEY_PRESSED,keyCode=0x12,keyChar=0xffff,modifiers=0x8 filtered
Event KEY_RELEASED,keyCode=0x12,keyChar=0xffff,modifiers=0x0 filtered

OSX 10.3.5
jEdit 4.2
java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.3)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)

When in debugger ~ shows, but when in buffer it doesn't. This is what I get from the debugger:

Event KEY_PRESSED,keyCode=0x12,keyChar=0xffff,modifiers=0x8 filtered
Event KEY_TYPED,keyCode=0x0,keyChar=0x7e,modifiers=0x0 passed
==> Translated to <0,7e>
Event KEY_RELEASED,keyCode=0x12,keyChar=0xffff,modifiers=0x0 filtered

Slava sent an e-mail to users@jedit.org on 2004-10-17 re OS X keyboard problems ("MacOS X international keyboard workaround") -- he put up a test build at http://www.jedit.org/jedit.jar. You may want to check his e-mail, try that jar, and report back to users@jedit.org. I don't know whether or not he reads the forums.
