How to get jEdit v4.2 open files in same instance?
Submitted by a992400 on Friday, 3 December, 2004 - 03:58
In jEdit v4.1, every time I opened a subsequent file using right-click on the file, it would open in the existing instance of jEdit. jEdit v4.2 starts a new instance for each one, forcing me to Alt+Tab back and forth. How do I get jEdit v4.2 to open multiple files in the same instance?

Use "-reuseview" parameter when launching jEdit.

Search help or do "java -jar jedit.jar -help" for more info.

"-reuseview" parameter
by a992400 on Fri, 03/12/2004 - 16:37
Ollie, thanks for your reply. I tried
[path]\javaw.exe -jar "[path]\jedit.jar" -help
and nothing happened.

Anyway, in the Windows icon I use for launching jEdit, and which was created by the install process, it calls:
[path]\javaw.exe -jar "[path]\jedit.jar"

I tried
[path]\javaw.exe -jar "[path]\jedit.jar" -reuseview
and
[path]\javaw.exe -jar [path]\jedit.jar -reuseview
and
[path]\javaw.exe -jar "[path]\jedit.jar -reuseview"
and
[path]\javaw.exe -jar -reuseview "[path]\jedit.jar"

I knew the last two wouldn't work, but the first two failed also. I then suspected that doing the first two at a command line would work, and it did. Unfortunately, I bet most Windows users launch jEdit from an icon or by right-clicking a file to edit. Is there any way to use -reuseview from an icon or by right-clicking a file?

This is my registry entry to add "Open with jEdit" to the context menu for all files. You may find it helpful.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Open with jEdit]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Open with jEdit\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Java\\j2re1.4.2_05\\bin\\javaw.exe\" -jar \"D:\\jEdit\\jedit.jar\" -reuseview \"%1\""

But does it not create new instance?
by Anonymous on Fri, 03/12/2004 - 20:26
Thanks for your reply. That Registry entry is already in my Registry, so jEdit must add it during the install. But using it, it still starts another instance ("view"). At least on my Win2K PC. How about you? Does it take you to the already running instance and simply open up the file you right-clicked on?

It works for me

I did all my registry entry work by hand, i.e. did not use the Windows installer. This lets me right click on any file, select "Open with jEdit", and it will open the file in the existing view. Works on W2K, and WXP.

Are you sure '-reuseview' is in the proper position?

Still trying

Sorry for the delay in replying; I was hosting guests.

Yes, I have '-reuseview' in the proper position.

BTW, you mention that you did not use the Windows installer. Dumb question, but how could you be using jEdit on Windows if you didn't run the Windows installer? Isn't that the only way to install it on Windows?

Windows install without windows installer

I get the "Java-based installer" rather than the "Windows installer".

Since 4.2pre14, when jEditLauncher was removed, the windows installer IMHO does a really half-assed job of setting up short cuts and registry entries, so I do it myself.

Contributions to improve the windows installer would be welcome.

The script used to generate the installer is in jEdit's CVS repository.
