An error at Jedit startup
Submitted by squier on Saturday, 17 May, 2008 - 13:46
I have installed Jedit v4.3 in my openSuSE v10.3 KDE system. Jedit does start, and immediately shows this error message:

------------------------
The following I/O operation could not be completed
home/user/Desktop/icon32.png
Cannot load with the encoding "UTF-8"
(java.nio.charset. MalformedInputException (Input length = 1)
.
.
.
-------------------------

If someone can tell me how to clear this error, I will be very grateful.

"icon32.png" is the filename of an icon that I tried (and failed) to associate with the script that calls Jedit.

If someone can also tell me why I am unable to substitute that, or any other icon for the generic one that the script now has, I would be even more so. When I open the Properties screens of the script, and try to drop an icon on the existing generic icon, the cursor changes to its "forbidden" form.

The error is occurring because it would appear you're trying to open the png file in a buffer in jEdit for editing. It's complaining that the file cannot be opened with the encoding UTF-8.

What exactly are you trying to do in your script?

There may be a couple of things you can do.

After jEdit starts up, try closing all the buffers (CTRL+E+W).

Or, after jEdit is starts up, do you see the icon32.png as one of the buffers? If so, bring focus to that buffer and go to "File" -> "Reload With Encoding" and try selecting a different encoding (like ISO-8859-1). If the file opens, close it.

I'm guessing that the issue is that either your failed script is opening the file into jEdit at startup, or the buffer was opened before the last time you exited jEdit, and it's reopening it the next time you start it up.

If you could provide a bit more information on what your script is doing, you could probably get more help.

An error in Jedit at startup

Thank you. Clearing the buffers did it.

I wasn't trying to do anything. Evidently I inadvertently got the icon into the buffer, and confused the editor. It's gone now.
