missing encoding big5 on xp on global settings

I am running xp professional and have need to use big5 encoding however it is not an option under global encodings, in fact there are several encodings that appear to be missing but this is the only one I need.

I have de-installed and then re-installed jedit 1.43pre14 to no avail. I have search microsoft and the web to see if I could find anything relevant but came up with nothing useful. Other programs on the same machine should the big5 encoding option.

Any ideas what might be the problem?

I am running Java 6 update 7.

I'm using JRE 1.6.0_07 (WinXP) and also couldn't see Big5 encoding. The User's Guide says: "jEdit can use any encoding supported by the Java platform".

So I tried *JDK* (1.5.0_06) instead of JRE and suddenly *many* more encodings have been available...

The interesting thing is that I have a second machine at home with XP home and JRE 1.6.0_07 and all the encodings are fine.

Please check it with "Utilities-> Troubleshooting -> Activity Log". In line 11 of the Activity Log the path to the used Java Environment is documented.

Well I checked the log as Robert suggested and discovered that it was actually loading the _05 version and not the _07. As it turned out I happened to do an update to Open Office which installed _04 which I didn't have installed. When I went back to jedit it now loaded the _07 version and all the encodings were present.

I'm using the same version of java like You (1.6.0_07) and I can't see Big5 encoding. But I'm using the runtime environment (JRE). Are You using the development kit (JDK), when Big5 is available?

I'm not sure how jEdit gets these encodings.

What version of Java are you running?

I'm on XP, with Java 6 and I see Big5 as one of the options.
