how can I add jedit to the context menu on a Mac to open several file types (html, txt, dat, ...)?
Thanks

If you used the Mac installer

If you used the Mac installer (dmg) then you should already have it. You may have to go to "other" and find it.

If you want to associate it with a particular file type, you can right click the file and choose "Get Info".

From there, you should be able to find the file type association.

hm, i did use the dmg. Maybe this is because I am using 4.3pre16 and not the stable...

using the "Get Info" would not change the context menu, but the default application to open a flie, right?

Right, but after you use jEdi

Right, but after you use jEdit for that type, it should come up as part of the accepted applications in the context menu.

for future reference: jEdit, Open with..., and Apple's UTI magic
by phos on Thu, 12/05/2011 - 22:42

I'm appending this comment to an old discussion since I've just dealt with this issue, and the two weeks of searching I did were a bit frustrating due to poor documentation on Apple's part. jEdit 4.4 pre1, Mac 10.6.7.

Choosing jEdit as a custom "Other..." selection for "Open with" does not result in a persistent jEdit "Open with" option for any file type I've checked. YMMV but I have never seen the behavior described above.

To make jEdit available as an "Open with..." Finder context menu option for basic text files as well as a useful assortment of source code (the following assumes a basic understanding of XML):

  1. Copy the relevant Universal Type Identifier (UTI) definitions out of another text editor that uses the XML variant for Info.plist. I copied mine from Sublime Text 2. It's a good start.
  2. Add the other definitions you need.
  3. Replace the old Info.plist with your new one.
  4. Drag the updated jEdit.app (with your new Info.plist) *out* of your Applications folder, no matter how deep it was. Drop it on the Desktop or something. Then drag it back in to /Applications/ , no deeper. Wait a moment.
  5. Check to see whether your context menu now works as desired.
  6. Put jEdit.app wherever you want under the Applications heirarchy.
Worked for me. Good luck, everyone.
