Getting past installation

I like the idea of jEdit and it really appeals to me, especially the portability. Is there any way for me to make it a simple executable jar file that i can run on any java-compatible platform? I want to be able to place it in my external hard drive so if i ever need to borrow a laptop, i can simply plug my hard drive in and start coding. I scanned the Install.java file and saw that every installation checks the current OS and installs based on that. Is there anyway to skip the install part and just compile an executable jar?

awesome, thanks! but where do i get jedit.jar? which distribution do i download? i have the source tarball already so what do i need to compile?

I assumed that You have installed jEdit on one machine already. If not, You should do this with any installer from http://www.jedit.org/index.php?page=download.

When I said "There's no need to install", I meant that the installer doesn't do much more than copying files...

There's no need to install. You can copy jEdit's program directory to every place You want and execute jedit.jar with Java. For portability it's a good idea to have plugins installed in program directory rather than in settings directory. One problem will cause a few platform-dependent plugin jars. Maybe You put them in different settings directories (one for each OS). Then You may want jEdit to use one of these settings directories rather than the default via the command line option -settings=directory.
