Can't Download and Install FTP Plug-in - Issues on a Mac
Submitted by kristenannie on Wednesday, 15 June, 2011 - 18:36
Hi there,
I have used JEdit for years on a Mac without any problems. A few weeks ago, suddenly, the file browser stopped working for browsing files on remote server with the ftp plug-in. I thought maybe I needed to just upgrade JEdit or something, so I downloaded jEdit 4.3.2 and installed it.

I went to start setting up my environment with the first thing being downloading the FTP plug-in again. The only problem is that I can't download the plug-in. It looks like it tries to do it and then gives me a message that says, "Error while downloading the plugin, please try another mirror. Operation timed out." I have tried quiet a few other mirrors, but still get this message. Any ideas?

JEdit is my preferred program to use to edit files on my remote servers, and I'd really like to get it working again.

Thanks!
Kristen

Okay, I was able to install the FTP plug-in manually by downloading the file here:

Then I extracted the zip file and put the contents here:

/Applications/jEdit.app/Contents/Resources/Java/jars

I restarted JEdit and I can see the plug-in, but I am still having the problem that the file browser will no longer list the files on my remote server when I put the path to be something like:

sftp://root@porthole.sbceoportal.org:22

And it used to be able to browse the files just fine, which made jEdit a great program for me to use. Any help is much appreciated, thanks!!!!!

Okay, I think I know what was going on with the file browser. For one, I needed to check the box in the Utilities->Global Options->File System Browser->General, that says "Mix files and directories." The other thing I noticed is that somehow the "Name" pane got minimized and I had to enlarge it to see the files.

Looks like I am back in business!
Thanks,
Kristen

connect dialog

For me, it works (jEdit 4.3.2, FTP plugin 0.9.7), but I don't use "secure". Maybe You should try to use the connect dialog first: In the file browser goto "Plugins -> FTP -> Connect to ..."
