An error at Jedit startup
Submitted by squier on Saturday, 17 May, 2008 - 13:46
I have installed Jedit v4.3 in my openSuSE v10.3 KDE system. Jedit does start, and immediately shows this error message:

------------------------
The following I/O operation could not be completed
home/user/Desktop/icon32.png
Cannot load with the encoding "UTF-8"
(java.nio.charset. MalformedInputException (Input length = 1)
.
.
.
-------------------------

If someone can tell me how to clear this error, I will be very grateful.

"icon32.png" is the filename of an icon that I tried (and failed) to associate with the script that calls Jedit.

If someone can also tell me why I am unable to substitute that, or any other icon for the generic one that the script now has, I would be even more so. When I open the Properties screens of the script, and try to drop an icon on the existing generic icon, the cursor changes to its "forbidden" form.

Hi, the Buffertabs plugin still does not work on Pre14. Pity, so I have to continue using Pre 12.

Updating jEdit to a newer Version + IDE question
Submitted by AzizLight on Sunday, 6 April, 2008 - 17:53
Hi everybody,
I have jEdit 4.3pre12 installed right now, but I don't remember if I installed it using the Java Installer or the regular Windows .exe installer. Now I want to installer version 4.3pre13, and I don't want to lose all my configuration stuff, what should I do.
A hard way to do it would be to take note of all the configurations I made, uninstall everything and then reinstall it; but if I could avoid this it would be amazing. Do you have a suggestion?

I also have another little question. I use jEdit for Web developpement mainly, and I use eclipse for Java. However, I'm in love with jEdit, is there a ways to make it a pseudo replacement for Eclipse? I know I can't integrate all the features of Eclipse in jEdit, but again, I don't want to. What I want is:
-all the errors to be underlined as I type or after I save and tell me what the error might be (and eventually give me a list of solutions) (like in Eclipse)
-integrate a compiler and be able to test my programs fast (like the Run button in Eclipse)
I already managed to reproduce all the other features I'm interested in (i.e. ErrorList Plugin) except those two, which unfortunately are the ones I'm the most interested in...

Thanks in advance,
Aziz
jEdit reinstall won't successfull launch
Submitted by tomcloyd on Tuesday, 1 January, 2008 - 23:34
I'm a huge fan of jEdit, and quite dependent on it for getting work done every day. I can't get my install to work any longer, and after hours and hours of work on it yesterday it still doesn't work. I'm desperate (there really is no substitute for jEdit - that I can find, anyway).

I'm working on Kubuntu Linux (ver. 7.10) - it's about my 4th day on Linux, coming from WnXP, so there are many things I don't yet know.

My install failed yesterday after an edit of the fonts in the text and interface areas, in Global Options. The launch would start, then crash. With help from someone in a Kubutu forum, I uninstalled my jEdit, and reinstalled. I did this multiple times. It still doesn't work. It crashes shortly after the splash screen appears. How far it gets into the launch seems to vary each time. Each time it crashes, it leaves a java instance behind, visible my localhost running processes list.

HOW can I get a successful install at this point? The install module I've been using is jedit_4.3pre12_all.deb

I would be so grateful for some assistant with this problem.

Cannot see contents of Samba share
Submitted by Slav Erik on Tuesday, 6 November, 2007 - 09:30
Hi,
I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 on my workstation, and most of my files are on my server(running ubuntu 6.06). I connect via a Samba share which is mounted at boot.
I installed jEdit via the .deb install using synaptic, and it appears to work great apart from one major issue, I cannot access any of my work files. The samba share appears but when I click on it it is shown as empty. I've turned off the two step save incase thats the problem but still no go.
Any help at this point would be much appreciated as it's taken me quite some time to find an IDE as good as phpEdit that runs on Linux.
Thanks.

Hi I'm using Debian sidux and Java 1.5 which is installed under /usr/bin/java. I've changed the JAVA_HOME and PATH variable as required. Nevertheless I'm getting the following error message when trying to start Jedit from a console with typing jedit &: GC Warning: Out of Memory! Returning NIL! GC Warning: Out of Memory! Returning NIL! Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError <> I've 2.5Gb Mem installed. What am I doing wrong? JJ
New OS X package added to files section
Submitted by VeryVito on Friday, 28 September, 2007 - 18:09
In case you're not happy with the standard icon set, I've uploaded a new icon pack to the Icons and Images section which should give you a more natural looking OS X app. The pack (and instructions for making jEdit look and feel as much like a native OS X app as possible) are also available at my Web site. (Just want to get as many Mac switchers as possible using this great editor!)

Windows jEdit launcher for Ant (bare name launcher)
Submitted by ajcacho on Sunday, 26 August, 2007 - 17:57
Hi
Here’s my two cents contribution (ok, I’m overrating this):
For invoking jEdit from Ant, irrespective of platform (i.e. not using OS specific code in Ant), it would be nice to invoke jEdit as a bare name, without extension.
Doing so it would try to launch jedit.exe in Windows and the jedit script in other OS (linux/bsd/...). But there's none in the 4.3 build.
For such purpose the Windows exe launcher of jEdit4.1 can be reused.
Here’s the procedure, step by step:
1. First be sure to have jEdit4.1 for Windows installed in the exact location intended for jEdit4.3 (if using other releases, better be sure to uninstall them first);
2. Copy to a backup directory apart the files with extensions exe, dll and .reg.txt, which where placed by the jEdit4.1 installer in the main jEdit directory;
3. Uninstall jEdit4.1;
4. Install jEdit4.3 to the previous location;
5. Copy the files from the backup directory (exe dll ...) to the main jEdit directory - notice that those files don’t have names clashing with the names used for the jEdit4.3 installation;
6. Test running the exe launcher from the command-line, and if necessary answer appropriately their initial questions by browsing to the java bin directory and so on.
I find it very useful to script in ant the editing of very large file sets. Alternatively jEdit can preserve specific work file sets.
Cheers,
Antonio

JAVA_HOME PATH How do I set it?
Submitted by steve_o on Tuesday, 10 April, 2007 - 13:30
I have installed jEdit on my edgy Ubuntu box and unfortunately for me it does not work. On reading their documentation found at: http://www.jedit.org/index.php?page=compatibility#unix
It appears that I need to set my JAVA_HOME PATH. I am a Linux newbie and I have no idea how to do that. I have searched far and wide but cant find a definitive way to achieve this or much in the way of help.

All help will be welcomed

Cheers in advance

jEdit no show, reinstall still no show
Submitted by mamboze on Friday, 30 March, 2007 - 01:02
Hi,

I've got a strange problem. I've been using jEdit for a couple of weeks and have been really getting used to it. But last night I went to fire it up but it wouldn't run. So to cut a long story short, I've uninstalled and re-installed jEdit and the Java runtime. I've checked on whether the Java runtime was broken by giving Eclipse a run, no problem there (with no Java installed, Eclipse gave an error message, when re-installed, it ran OK). So I think I've ruled out the Java runtime as the source of the problem (but I may be wrong).

I want to get jEdit running again as it is a very good editor, so any help would be most welcome.
Debian Package fails with sun-java6
Submitted by vikingr on Thursday, 15 March, 2007 - 22:17
Hey,

I've got Debian Etch with sun-java6 from Sid (Unstable).
When I tried to install jedit_4.3pre9_all.deb from your website, it fails
because the package has sun-java5 as a dependency.

As jEdit runs very well with sun-java6, it would be great if you could
fix that issue.

Thanks a lot!
Pleanse consider about rebuilding the 4.3pre9 deb package

Installs okay from binary, Won't install from build
Submitted by jax on Thursday, 11 January, 2007 - 18:45
I built the current jEdit source.

It builds okay, but when I try java installer.Install , the dialogs come up, I fill out the paths, click to proceed, and a dialog pops up, "Stream closed". On the other hand, the installer I download as a binary from the website works. What am I doing wrong?
