Views are the top level windows of jEdit. A Plain View contains only an Edit Pane, while the default View also has Tool Bars? and a Status Bar. Any View can show the Action Bar, which only shows up when it's asked for.

In Global Options?->View there are a few simple configuration options for views. You can choose whether the horizontal or vertical Docking Bars will get the corners when both are displayed, and you can choose whether Tool Bars? go inside (closer to the Edit Pane) or outside of the docking areas.

To really customize your view, you'll want to add plugins and dock them to the Docking Bars.

Plugins can add toolbars to a View using one of %JAVADOC{jEdit:org.gjt.sp.jedit.View}%'s addToolbar() methods.
