Ctrl+TAB to switch buffers
Submitted by Anonymous on Thursday, 28 October, 2004 - 12:44
Hi, I'm used to use ctrl+tab in almost every "tabbed" software to switch buffers -- some apps do it in "stupid" way when ctrl+tab only moves focus to next tab (which I believe can be simulated in jEdit by redefining shortcuts binding) but I found no way to switch tabs (buffers) in a smart way - like Windows XP when using alt+tab: bring the most recently used buffer to the top.

Thank you for the solution. Pavel.

Either way, it's still nice that jEdit allows such shortcuts and that it is not hard to make the editor like one you are well-used to.

Original Poster: Go to Utils/Global/Shortcuts and set alternative shortcuts for "Go to next buffer" and "Go to previous buffer" to be CTRL+TAB and CS+TAB, as you like.

Followon "It's not possible" Posters: If you don't understand what he's asking for, try replying with "I don't understand what you're asking for. Can you explain?" You'd be amazed how much you learn.

I think that ALT+TAB is reserved for use by Windows; see "Design Trade-offs" in the Multiple-Document Interface. Also, see "Switching Between MDI Child Windows" in the same page. It says that the recommended keyboard shortcuts for switching between child windows are CTRL+F6 and CTRL+TAB.
"Go to Recent Buffer"

Hi,

go to Utilities->Global Options->Shortcuts->Go to recent Buffer

Define CTRL-Tab as shortcut for this function.

Hope it helps,
Lars

It's close but the behavior works only for two buffers - I can never achieve any other buffer. I would like to simulate Alt+TAB in Windows.

Did you try "ctrl+page up" or "ctrl+page down", these work similar to "ctrl+tab" of windows, and it is not just for 2 buffers, work for more than two buffers. Just checking if thats what you were looking for.

Wrong shortcut

Edit "Go to next buffer" instead of "Go to recent buffer".

Have you ever seen Windows? Have you ever used alt+tab?

Short answer to your question

Short answer to your question: it's not possible.

However, it would be nice to have. Might code up a plugin for this, but in the meantime you're out of luck.

Too bad

Recent Buffer Switching
by mt on Fri, 06/01/2006 - 15:11
Hi Pavel,
exactly this shortcoming drove me mad, so I wrote a plugin to fix it, it's now in plugin manager, RecentBufferSwitcher, if you map the ctrl tab shorcut to open buffer switcher you should get the behaviour you are after, good luck.

Works great!

Beside the fact that the tab-window is ugly ;o) this is awesome! Thanks for it!
