macro 'Display character code' doesn't?
Submitted by McSwell on Monday, 19 September, 2005 - 14:46
I have a file with some Unicode chars, and I want to see what Unicode code point they are. It sounds like the 'display character code' macro (accessible from Macros | Misc | Display character code) should do what I want, but in fact I don't see anything when I run it. As I understand it, it's supposed to display on the status line the codepoint of the char at the cursor, but I get nothing.

Is it broken, or am I not holding my mouth right? (I do have the Status Bar turned on, and I believe it has all the default settings. I tried turning off the Buffer Tabs plugin, on the chance that this was messing up the display of the Status Bar, but it didn't help.)

For me, the macro works fine, with Unicode too.

it works--sort of

OK, I found what part of the problem is: if I assign this macro to a shortcut key, it displays the result in the status bar, as you describe.

BUT, when I click my mouse on the menu item Macros | Misc | Display Character Code, there is no msg (or more likely, the msg flashes so quickly that I can't see it).

So the question now is, how can I get it to work--i.e. display the result in the status bar--when I run it from the menu, instead of from a shortcut key? (I don't use it that often that I want to assign it to a key, but when I do use it, I need it!)

Workarounds

I have no really solution but some workarounds how you can get it to work.

1. Invoke it from the menu and then use the repeat last action shortcut (default is C+Space)
2. Don't release the mouse button while navigating to the Macro in the menu. If you hold the mouse button down the whole way from menu to macro it works.
3. Don't call it by clicking, but with keyboard. Call the menu with Alt+C, navigate to the macro with the arrow-keys, and invoke it with the enter-key
4. Navigate with the mouse to the Macro until it is highlighted, but do not click. Then press enter.

Thanks, those work. I wonder why they're necessary...must have s.t. to do with the way the status bar is updated, I guess.
