Using JEdit on UNIX system (Solaris P)
Submitted by rlanier on Tuesday, 14 October, 2008 - 15:40
I've used jedit for a while now, and I've noticed something peculiar: if I start instance #2 of jedit, the files that are open in instance #1 show up in instance #2 window, and vice versa. For example, if I start jedit like this:

jedit file1.txt (terminal window #1)
jedit file2.txt (terminal window #2)

I will get two instances of jedit running, but I will see both file1.txt and file2.txt in BOTH instances of jedit!

Why is this and how can I prevent this happening?

You didn't start two instances. Normally, the first call to jedit launches the jedit server (the main but invisible program) and opens a new view (a visible window). The next call brings up an existing view when using the command line option "-reuseview", otherwise another new view is opened. At startup jedit opens all views that has been open at last exit.

For more details about invoking jEdit see jEdit's User Guide .

In the past, all open buffers has been available in all jedit views. The latest version of jEdit (4.3pre15) supports a new feature called "buffer sets" to maintain different buffer lists in different views - see jEdit's User Guide .

Robert,

I've tried several of the options described in the User Guide, but I still get the same problem. Until this can be resolved, I will have to fall back to Nedit. At least with that editor, I can open up multiple instances within different workspaces, and not have the same files open in both workspaces.

I have the same problem on two brand new Gentoo amd64 Linux Workstations. I tried the stable version, the last version (4.3-pre17). Multiple windows opening the same View. It's crazy!
The application launches in server mode (default), I can see it from the miniwindow "about Jedit".

I happily installed Jedit stable and devel on other workstations with Debian amd64, Gentoo, MacOSX - and Windows Sad and I never experienced this kind of problem.

I don't know if it's Window Manager or application fault, I use the same window manager (LXDE) on other machines and it's correctly running in the same window. I also tried the -reuseview option which is useless.

I hope that someone had this problem too, and fixed it.

Cheers
