java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused

I updated my Fedora 10 box yesterday and now cannot launch jEdit. At least, I'm assuming the update is responsible. There was nothing else that I can think of that might have changed. When it launches, I see only a white screen, no window at all. I can see my gnome panels, though. I know next to nothing about Java sockets or jEdit server. Could the gtk or x11/xorg updates possibly be at fault? BTW, I did try to upgrade jEdit before posting here, but that's been a bit of a problem itself, and is the subject of the next post I'll be making. I figured I should keep them separate.

Please don't blame me--the preview isn't working at all. So, what's with the newlines disappearing? No code tag? No break? And how come I can edit my comment but not the intial post? What kind of forum is this?

Hmm.. Very weird. I've never had that problem before. Can you check to see if you have any java processes already running?

Also, how did you install jEdit? Java installer, or some other means?

You said it was installed previously, have you tried to re-install jEdit?

Also, it doesn't look like this would cause jEdit to not startup, does the new Fedora come with any eye-candy? Compiz, etc..

Try disabling it and see if it helps any.

Lastly, you're not the only one seeing issues with the preview, although I haven't personally experienced it. What browser are you using, and what version?

There are no other java processes running. Now that I think of it, though, I might try installing another java app or two to see if they have similar problems.

I'm pretty sure I installed 4.3pre12 using the jar installer. I know it wasn't through yum, as I've never been able to get jpackage to play nice. This had been running fine for several months, when I upgraded to Fedora 10.

I did try renaming ~/.jedit and starting "fresh" but got as far as a couple of (blank) windows opening and freezing. The activity log showed no errors in that instance.

I also tried installing 4.2 but, like with 4.3pre16, it gets as far as the installer window opening but it's unresponsive. And I see pretty much the same backtrace:

It sure looks like either the xorg, x11, or gtk update are responsible.

I'm not sure about Compiz. Fedora's nice to look at and all but I don't think about that sort of thing much with this box. There isn't even a sound card. I'll poke around to see if there's any graphics acceleration.

I would definitely see about Compiz though. It might have been installed during the update, and then enabled by default.

What version of Fedora did you upgrade from?

Also, did you install Java? or was it installed for you? You might try reinstalling it, perhaps something got fouled up during the upgrade.

The problem was due to the libX11 update for Fedora 10 a few days ago. A patch has already been added to updates-testing and it worked for me. It should be pushed out soon, as this affected *many* different apps.
