installing on ubuntu 8.04

hi, is there any detailed installation instructions page anywhere? somehow the installation doesn't seem to work.
1- does it matter if other java installations are present?
2 - if other java installations are present how to direct jedit to recognise sun's java
3 - how to install java and jedit with synaptic
4 - any tweaking that needs to be done and how exactly can that be done? etc

Absolutely. If jEdit isn't using Sun's java, there may be oddities.

2 - if other java installations are present how to direct jedit to recognise sun's java

Set the JAVA_HOME property, or change the startup script to use the java of your choice.

3 - how to install java and jedit with synaptic

For Java search for "Sun Java". For jEdit, you should be able to find it, or download the .deb package from the website and use it to install.

4 - any tweaking that needs to be done and how exactly can that be done? etc

Tweaking? You may have issues if your ubuntu comes installed with the desktop effects running. If so, search around for Java and Eye Candy, or Java and desktop effects, you'll find solutions.
