Portable version of jEdit for Windows
Submitted by wpp-dev on Friday, 15 January, 2010 - 22:34
Hello,

I'm a winPenPack.com developer.
winPenPack ( http://www.winpenpack.com and http://sourceforge.net/projects/winpenpack ) is a collection of open source portable programs for Windows, optimized for use with a USB pen drive or any portable device and also directly from Hard Disk.

I'd like to signal you that we have developed a portable version of jEdit for Windows, called X-jEdit, in winPenPack.com Format: http://www.winpenpack.com/main/download.php?view.840 . You have just to download the .zip archive, uncompress it and double-click on X-jEdit.exe

Obviously, any suggestion or feedback will be welcome! Smiling

TECHNICAL DETAILS:

1 - at X-jEdit first run, the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is automatically downloaded and extracted in X-jEdit\Lib\Java\ folder (but only if JRE is not present in this directory). In this way anyone can use jEdit even if Java is not installed in the host pc;

2 - the "-Duser.home" parameter has been set: all settings are stored in \User\jEdit directory instead of %USERPROFILE%\.jEdit folder;

3 - all paths of recent files (if the files are saved in \Bin\, \User\, \Lib, \Documents, \Downloads or \Backups directories) are normalized when the drive letter or the software position changes;

4 - all paths included in "history", "properties", "recent.xml" and "perspective.xml" are normalized when the drive letter or the software position changes;

5 - the "backup.directory" has been set.

Good Work !

but ...

I use an highly customized version of jedit on 2 PC's (Home/Work).

A big Problem is to handle the absolute Path's for custom Toolbar-Icons or Background-Images. So far I have not found a Solution for this Problem. JEdit writes the apsolute pathes of the img-files into the properties files.

It would be great if that could be fixed somehow.

Now absolute paths are normalized, but only if images and backgrounds are saved in \Bin\jEdit , \User\jEdit , \Documents\jEdit or \Backups\jEdit directories. I hope this release fix the problem:

Please, let me know.
Thank you for the feedback! Eye-wink

Hi! I'm using your version

Hi!

I'm using your version of portable jEdit, but usually I'm using portableApps.com's portable stuff. Since they don't have jEdit, I found yours.

Now I have 3 questions:
1) How can I update to a jEdit 5?
2) How can I change the java directory. In PortableApps it's located in another directory
3) How can I add more settings/properties directories to be inspected for changed driveletters. e.g. I use the ProjectViewer and its files need to be changed too.

Workaround
by Robert Schwenn on Thu, 11/02/2010 - 19:11
I added a "startup_2.bsh" into the startup directory with the following lines:

JEDIT_HOME = jEdit.getJEditHome();
jEdit.setTemporaryProperty("active_buffer/Open_in_UltraEdit.icon", "file:" + JEDIT_HOME + "\\icons\\UEdit.png");

So, the macro "%JEDIT_HOME%/macros/active_buffer/Open_in_UltraEdit.bsh" gets the icon %JEDIT_HOME%\icons\UEdit.png. The property should be removed manually from the "properties" file.
