Cannot add or edit filter strings in File Browser

I have just installed jEdit on Mac OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard),
flawlessly.

All the settings I like are now made and saved and restored OK.

A lot of keystrokes have been re-customized, but it all works.

I always filter groups of files to avoid opening the wrong
type of file.

So when I go to enter a new group of filter characters into
the File Browser (using Ctrl+O), I cannot enter any character,
not can I change an existing filter group that I managed to add
before (but don't know how).

A typical group of filters is:

{*.py,*.c,*.h}

...and I like to extend the group now and again.

There is NO problem in entering characters of any kind within
the editor itself - only into the "Filter" edit box in the
File Browser.

I have reset the machine in case this was a serious Java
problem, but no use.

Can anyone help?

Sorry for the question, but: Have You enabled the filter by checking the checkbox before the "Filter" label? If not, the filter is disabled and the textfield is disabled, too.

If it is enabled, what exactly means "cannot enter any character"?

Thanks for the suggestion - yes, I always check and uncheck the filter checkbox as needed - sometimes to just see all possible files, then flip the filter back on again.

But even with the filter enabled, I can only backspace over the filter string, then when it's empty, cannot enter even one character - as if the maximum characters allowable is now zero.

This may have to do with my MAC OS X setup in Snow Leopard (10.6.4) or my customizations of many jEdit keys, bit it is also now happening in the "Save As" dialog box - characters can be entered into the filename field, but not pasted, and "Cut" won't work either.

I may be doing something dumb.

Does this help to pinpoint what's happening?

OK, I understand what happens - but not why Sad

Maybe You should try to start jEdit without Your settings directory (just rename it before). If You don't know it, look at "Utilities -> Settings Directory" - the first item is it.

If this solved the problem, You could look for the setting that causes it...
