Submitted by Brad_Mace on Monday, 8 September, 2003 - 04:28
"...the Apache Software Foundation has initiated a project to develop an open source, Apache-licensed implementation of the J2EE specification. In addition, the project is committed to certifying the implementation as J2EE compliant."

Original announcement is here.

Website back to normal

Since loosing stuff is bad, we'll be implementing a new backup policy which will put a copy of all the important stuff in a nice safe place every night.
SourceForge Outage
Submitted by Brad_Mace on Sunday, 24 August, 2003 - 15:29
The only parts of the site really affected by this are the message boards and the wiki Sad Please re-create any changes that have been lost once we are back on the main server.

The outage affected all projects that start with j, q, s, or y as well as all users whose login names start with c, i, r, or z.
Now with Wiki goodness
Submitted by Brad_Mace on Wednesday, 13 August, 2003 - 19:48
We now have a wiki but currently it's almost completely unchanged from the default install. It's up to all the jEdit users to turn it into whatever you want it to be. Get a user name and go to work. Almost everypage can be edited by anyone. If you've never used a wiki before you can play around in the Sandbox web to try things out. Some content suggestions to get you started:
  • Configurations for working with java, C++, HTML, etc
  • Tips for people switching from Emacs, vi, bbedit, ...
  • Feature suggestions for jEdit or plugins
  • Site upgrade complete
    Submitted by Brad_Mace on Tuesday, 12 August, 2003 - 01:15
We're going to call the latest site update completed. Not everything we hoped to do has been finished, but everything that's here works. A few of the biggest changes:
  • Download submissions will be stored locally rather than on individual user's servers.
  • Much nicer forums. If feasible, the old messages will be ported over.
  • While only registered users can start new forum topics, anyone can read and respond to them
  • Outdated information has been removed
  • Hopefully we'll get a wiki up and running soon too. If you have ideas for further improving the

    jEdit 4.2 feature suggestions
Submitted by slava on Saturday, 9 August, 2003 - 06:24
jEdit 4.2 development is going well and there will be a feature freeze soon so that I can focus on making 4.2final more stable than 4.1 ever was. Does anyone have suggestions for features they'd like to see in the editor core before 4.2final?
    PostNuke expert needed
Submitted by slava on Sunday, 8 June, 2003 - 22:53
Does anyone want to help out a bit with the community site? It needs some outdated content removed (jEdit 4.0-era documentation). Also an update to the latest PostNuke release would be nice.
    New, separate, plugin bug tracker
Submitted by slava on Thursday, 29 May, 2003 - 05:58
Previously core and plugin bugs were both in the same tracker. Now, I have created a new plugin bug tracker.
Second call for a jEditLauncher maintainer
Submitted by slava on Wednesday, 14 May, 2003 - 03:33
jEditLauncher is currently unmaintained and since I don't run Windows there is nothing I can do about it. Can someone at least update the version number shown in Add/Remove Programs? right now it says "jEdit 4.0"! There are many other things that need to be fixed, so it would be nice if it had a maintainer. If the code remains unmaintained it will eventually be removed from the jEdit distribution, so if you like jEditLauncher, please help out!
    jEdit 4.2 development begins
Submitted by slava on Sunday, 23 March, 2003 - 20:17
More minor changes already implemented include action history, an action bar, improved docking, persistent registers, and improved syntax highlighting. You can test the current code by checking out from the CVS repository. I'm aiming for a 4.2pre1 release in early April. If you have tried the current CVS code, post your feedback below.
Mac OS X package problem (jEdit 4.1)
Submitted by krisk on Sunday, 2 March, 2003 - 18:44
If you have blurred text on the vertical tabs or experience freezes (whole system) then you can either download the Mac OS X package again or do the following:

    1) Edit the info.plist file located at jEdit/jEdit.app/Contents/info.plist

    2) Insert this after line 75:
    com.apple.hwaccel
    false
    WebDAV plugin for jEdit

A WebDAV plugin for jEdit is under development.
    jEditLauncher needs a new maintainer
Submitted by slava on Friday, 7 February, 2003 - 17:54
The jEditLauncher package (used to start jEdit and integrate it with the shell on Windows) is no longer being developed by its original author, John Gellene, and it needs a new maintainer. Anybody willing to take over? It is written in C++ using the Win32 API.
    Plugins and 4.1final
Submitted by slava on Monday, 30 December, 2002 - 22:24
First of all, a number of plugins need to be updated for the new icon set; right now they either look out-of-place or icons don't show up at all. This includes AntFarm, Sessions, JBrowse, AntViz, and maybe others.

Also, I would really, really, like to see someone step up to either take over CodeAid and Jane, or start from scratch to write a code completion plugin that actually works.

I would also like to see ProjectViewer and Gruntspud improve to the point where they are usable for day-to-day work.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Submitted by slava on Tuesday, 24 December, 2002 - 19:00
I hope the entire jEdit community has a great holiday season. Also, jEdit 4.1pre7 will be out within the next couple of days. After this, there will only be a few bug fix releases until jEdit 4.1final.
    jEdit as a Swing component
Submitted by darius on Tuesday, 24 December, 2002 - 17:37
I just wondered whether it was possible (or even reasonable) to consider using jEdit or parts of it as a Swing component to be integrated in applications.

    Slava says: look at syntax.jedit.org.
Freezes under Java 1.4.1 with Windows
Submitted by slava on Saturday, 14 December, 2002 - 22:57
This is turning into a FAQ, so I thought I'd post it on the community site. A lot of people have complained that jEdit can hard freeze their windows system after upgrading to Java 1.4.1. If you experience this, the problem is not with jEdit, but with your video driver. Updating the driver to the latest version should solve the problem; downgrading to Java 1.4.0 might also work.
    Moving Plugin Central
Submitted by mdillon on Tuesday, 8 October, 2002 - 02:07

With Plugin Central's bandwidth requirements averaging nearly 2 gigabytes per day, the prospects of finding a single provider willing to host the site for free from among jEdit's users are not good. Even if the site load could somehow be balanced across servers hosted by multiple providers, the number of servers that would be necessary to make the resource requirements reasonable to ask of volunteers would be large enough to make that possibility even less likely. For that reason, we have established a new jedit-plugins project on SourceForge to host Plugin Central. The transition from Standard Media's server to SourceForge should be completed within the next few weeks.

    New Banners
Submitted by krisk on Saturday, 5 October, 2002 - 16:53
There are 2 new "Made with jEdit" banners available by Joshua Miller, so if you'd like to pay homage to your favourite text editor on your web site, head on over to the images section.
    jEdit development resumes
Submitted by slava on Friday, 2 August, 2002 - 18:35
I have started work on jEdit again. You can find the beginnings of 4.1pre3 in the CVS, although currently the only changes are a few minor tweaks and bug fixes. There will be more changes soon, with an actual 4.1pre3 release before the end of August.
