Getting started: How to compile java program?
Submitted by Anonymous on Wednesday, 10 March, 2004 - 19:10
Hi,
I am new to jedit and have been using textpad to write java programs. I can't get my helloworld application or anything to run on jedit. Is it complicated to run java programs on jedit? Please help!! Detail instructions appreciated a lot. Thanks.

I am also fairly new to JEdit, and only used it because my previous Java editor was annoying me to death. If you don't have the Console plug-in, you should get it.

To compile, set your working directory (in the console) to the java programs directory (on mine it's C:\j2sdk1.4.1_06\bin. Then go to Plugins->Console->javac and the program will run for you.

To execute, use the java command (from anywhere, it doesn't matter).

Hope I could be of some help!

Thank you for this. I had everything working except the ability to actually execute my classes without using the MS-DOS shell. This is some editor.

integrated compilation

You can also make things more integrated by downloading the jcompiler plugin and errorlist plugin along with Console.

They work very well together once you've configured things properly.

Set the classpath on the jcompiler plugin, and then assign a shortcut key (Utilities-Global Options-Shortcuts-JCompiler) e.g. Shift+F10 to JCompiler's "Compile File" command, and you can then compile your current file after saving simply by pressing S+F10.

ErrorList will then display any lines with errors, and at a click you are placed at the offending statement in the source editor window. Much better than having to wade through javac's output Smiling

The Tasklist plugin is also great for dev work allows you to place todo statements and other user-definable tags, e.g.
// TODO: DO something

// DEBUG: debug lines follow

and lists lines (as hyperlinks) that contain these so you can find them later.

Hope that helps Eye-wink
