Can't go past end of lines
Submitted by dbareis on Friday, 13 August, 2004 - 02:20
Hi,

I've been using JEDIT fulltime for a while now and one of its most annoying features is that it won't let you go past the end of the line.

Other editors allow you to do this and backfill with witespace if something is typed. I should be able to down-arrow from a long line to a shorter one and not have the current position moved to the end of this line.

Am I missing an option, I've looked...

Thanks,
Dennis

Perhaps this does help?

In jEdit 4.2 Control-clicking beyond the end of a line inserts the appropriate amount of white space and moves the caret there.

That's nice, thanks, but it doesn't fully resolve the problem. I'll give you an example of how the lack of (keyboard-driven) positioning beyond the EOL is annoying, and that your suggestion doesn't solve:

If my cursor is at position (x,y), and I want to get to or near position (x+k, y+k), in other editors, I will often simply hit the right arrow key and the down arrow key (virtually) simultaneously, k times - BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM - which quickly and easily brings me where I want to be. (I'm not saying I calculate k or whatever - I just know I want to go down and right a bunch of times).

In jEdit, that will, in all likelyhood, bring me to a disconcertingly random place, instead of where I want to be.

I strongly second this recommendation. The lack of ability to position past the EOL is incredibly annoying.

It should obviously be a configurable option.
