JEdit 4.2 on Win2K wants to open everything under the sun

Installed jEdit 4.2 on a Windows 2000 machine, and I'm pretty happy with it. The problem is that it wants to open ton's of stuff it shouldn't. The other day I double-clicked on a jpeg file, and it opened in jEdit. I have the default type for ".jpg" files to open with irfanview, but double-clicking still opens with jEdit. The right-click contextual menu has "Open with jEdit" <- in BOLD first "Open" <- in plain text second. I right-click, select "open with..." navigate to the proper app, Check "use this Always for this type file" Select OK. But the next time I double click, it opens in jEdit. Whats up? - MacBSD

I experience the same and really troubled by this problem. I decide to uninstall it and hope find some update regarding this but none found.

Any clue where the problem is?

I don't know why this is happening. It may be that the association in the registry is not correct. Try removing the following key from your registry:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\Open with jEdit

and your problem, along with the context menu entry, should go away.

Thanks. That solved the problem. Now, to open files, I just drag them into a jEdit window. Too bad I can't right click and select "open with" and select jEdit, but that's because it's a .jar.

It seems that the original problem has to do with the priority of the entry in the contextual menu. jEdit was getting placed ahead of the default action.

In other words, I was getting:

Open with jEdit
Open

instead of:

Open
Open with jEdit

So a doubleclick would get the bold "open with jEdit" instead of the default "open". Thanks, - Roger

SendTo (addendum)

Note:

You might want to add a -reuseview switch to the .lnk in your SendTo menu. Right-click the .lnk, select Properties, add a space followed by -reuseview to the end of the Target field. Now when you use Send To -> jEdit to open a file, jEdit will not create a new window if it is already running.

I found out that you can easily add jEdit to the "Send To" menu. This a good alternative to the "Open with jEdit" registry hack.

All you have to do is copy your normal jEdit .lnk file from your (start menu | desktop | quick launch bar) and paste it into your %USERPROFILE%/SendTo directory. (For example: C:\Documents and Settings\bob\SendTo)

Now, when you right click a file and choose Send To -> jEdit the file will open in jEdit.
