Same settings and plugins for all users?
Submitted by cyther on Wednesday, 29 September, 2004 - 17:37
Hi!

How to set up jEdit so that all users (on Linux) use the same settings, plugins etc?
Sorry if it a FAQ (I didn't find any clue in the Help or FAQ).

Thanx
Cyther

Use the "jars", "properties", "macros", etc.. directories in the jEdit install directory (not ~/.jedit).

"use"?

Thanx for your answer!

That's exactly my problem: how to tell jEdit it has to take "that" path and not "this" one?
When I start jEdit as "userX" it creates a directory userX/.jedit
When I start jEdit as "userY" it creates a directory userY/.jedit

And I didn't find a way to force another path so that all users have the same config path.

Is there a config file or a setting in the options I would have overseen?

use = put the files into thos

use = put the files into those directories.

jEdit has parallel directories. Say, for example, you install jEdit here:

/usr/local/jedit42

All plugins you put into /usr/local/jedit42/jars and all properties you put into /usr/local/jedit42/properties and all macros that are in /usr/local/jedit42/macros will be shared by all users.

A specific user's plugins woulc be in ~/.jedit/jars and their macros in ~/.jedit/macros and so on.

userX/.jedit is where user-specific things will be saved. Do you really want userY to open jEdit have the same list of files, last search, etc... as userX? If that's what you want, which probably isn't a good idea, start jEdit with "-settings=" argument.

Poke around inside your jEdit install dir -- ./properties, ./startup have readme files that may provide more details.

I got it!
