I use jedit and other java apps everyday at school from a usb stick. Though, I do not have a JRE included on the stick.

...it's difficult to say how to setup the configuration to best suite your needs. At my school we have access to user enviroment variables under Windows...so I have a .bat file in the root of my usb stick that sets up paths and dependancies for all the Java applications on my usb stick. I can give you a copy of this file (works only on Win XP/2000) if you'd like...email me for it.

Under Linux, you could do the same thing if you wanted. Make a shell script (.sh file) that sets up paths to all your applications. At my school we don't have permission(s) to mount a volume/device under Linux, so I can't use my usb sticks under Linux at school (though I do at home Smiling ).

Also, in working under Linux/Windows off of one device (your usb stick) you will find that jedit (in particular) "looks" different. The Java Look and Feel for the OSs are different, and certain fonts are not available under Linux that exist under Windows. You can solve some of these issues by putting .jar files with custom look and feels and fonts into a directory (..like the jedit settings directory!!!...that you can custom set dynamically at startup with a .bat/.sh file)...

anyways...email me at blue_technx@yahoo.com with questions.
