I second this question.

I am currently using Macros.message() to do printf debugging and it is painful.
Does anyone have a better way?
I have set up a wiki page to share Plugin Debugging Techniques

You can use JDB to perform true debugging while running the plugin in jEdit. I've posted a link on the Plugin Debugging Techniques article to the reference documentation along with a short description. You will have to do the heavy lifting of figuring out how it works since there is no tutorial.
