jEdit GUI suddenly dis-proportional?!

All of a sudden the jEdit GUI under linux looks broken - fonts does not fit their boxes (some lists are undreadable because fonts are too big, others have too much space around them).

What can have happened? I don't remember doing anyting special except maybe messing around a bit with XF86Config ?

I also had the same problem when i first installed jEdit 4.2 on my gentoo linux. I soon font a way to fix it. here are the steps to correct this.

1. from Menu Utilities->Global Options...
2. in Global Options Dialog select jEdit-> Appearance
3. From the Dropdown for "Swing look & feel" select "Metal"
4. Select a different font for "Button, menu and Lable" say Arial or so.
5. Select a font for "list & text fields"
6. Click Apply & or OK buttons.
7. restart the jEdit.

This should fix the problem. If Arial dosent work or you dont have it try some other font and follow above steps.

This does not help - I've tried a few fonts an nothing looks right (There is no Arial under X11 by the way).

I completely removed all my settings but that didn't help either.

Same problem here, the spaces

Same problem here, the spaces between the lines are huge, the menu is broken etc.

It's a Gentoo Linux, and I've tried the advices from the previous poster. No effect. Has someone other ideas?
