A total beginner

I downloaded JBuilder but it looks pretty complicated for me and I may have to switch to something simpler. I might download a text editor like jEdit and then install that along with Java 1.4. Is that all I need to do then to start writing programs? When I install jEdit will it automatically link itself to Java 1.4 or do I have to go through some manual configuration process to link the two together?

And what is a plug-in? Do I need to install any plug-ins? Or can I use jEdit just the way it comes in the download?

JEdit can be used to write programs without installing any Plugins. The installer automatically configures to run with Java, usually.

However, JEdit does NOT provide any support for compiling or running Java programs by default. For this, you need to install some plugins. Console is a good one, also ErrorList and JCompile. You don't need any of these to run Java programs, since you could also do the same thing from a command line shell (ie: DOS Prompt or Linux console):

So if I just install JEdit all I can do with that is just use it to enter my Java code? I can't hit a "Run" button and run my program? I would need to open up a command prompt to do that? But if I install some plugins then I can compile and run my programs within the JEdit Editor then?
