Paste into Search input box
Submitted by Peter Mount on Wednesday, 2 November, 2005 - 06:40
Hi

I'd like to be able to copy text to the clipboard and paste it into the input field under "Search For" in the "Search and Replace" popup window. Can this be done in the Windows version?

Thanks

Yes. You can copy any text into the search for field. You can also select text within jEdit, hit ctrl-F and the selected text will be in the field automatically, provided it doesn't span more than one line.

Yes you can from within Jedit

Yes you can from within Jedit, but now if one wants to copy and search for occurences of a chain from an external source (in my case texture name from a 3d model) they have to copy from the external prog, paste into a buffer in Jedit then Ctrl-F a selection from this buffer and search.

Is there an easier way ? Why don't they allow pasting into the search box anyways... i mean, come on, this would seem to be the most obvious and standard thing to do (same for the quicknote thingie)

paste it!

How David already wrote in November:
"Yes. You can copy any text into the search for field."

It means:
You can paste any copied text (from the system's clipboard) into the search for field. Smiling

well then, for some reason it doesnt work for me...
or maybe i am not doing the proper thing.
I am going to insist... one moment later Eye-wink ...

Just tried, and found out that Ctrl-V doesnt work but Shit-Insert does.
Go figure, i never used Shift-Insert before. Is this only me, or is this normal that both are not acting the same way ? and if it is so, why ? i mean why did "they" decide that it would be more intuitive if Ctrl-V wouldnt work in the search field or quicknotepad ?

Change Look and Feel

I had the same problem. Try to switch to the Windows Look&Feel. Then Ctrl-V should work again. Shift-Ins should work anyway.

"They" did not decide it. In jEdit both Ctrl-V and Shift-Insert works for me. But there are situations in other programs where Shift-Insert works better than Strg-V. You don't need to know why - it's a computer Smiling

Windows generally has relatively few problems with handling the clipboard, as Java can easily access it. In Linux, KDE and GNOME may have their own clipboards and those cannot always be accessed by other programs. In that case, whereever you copy from may not be paste-able in other programs for that reason.

Hi

Thanks for that. I didn't know that's how it was done.

Have a good day
