Jedit can't use the network (but everything else can)

Hey folks. I just installed the latest jedit via the java installer on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 with j2re-1.4.2. Jedit starts fine, but when I try to install a plugin it complains about having no route to host even though the system definitely has net access. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Are you behind a proxy? If so the fill out the proxy details in Utilities->Global Options->jEdit->Proxy Servers

"An I/O Error occurred (No route to host)" downloading a plugin

I get the same problem. No, I'm not behind a proxy that I know of.... after all, jedit first downloads the list of plugins from the net!
I then check (tick) *any* plugin and then try to download it by clicking "Install"... then I get the above message.
Help, please?!?

Edited: Argh! I just tried looking at the "Download Options" --- then a thought struck me... how about clicking on something other than "Plugin Central default".

I changed to another one.. and downloads work!

Can we change this so that it works for newbies and croaks alike? And that the Plugin Manager selects a download site by actually 'ping'ing it to see if it's alive? Can I help change this myself?... Where can I start learning about this sort of stuff?
