Reuse buffer when opening files externally
Submitted by romi on Tuesday, 11 April, 2006 - 08:42
Hi everyone!

Sorry if I'm posting a trivial question, but as I use jEdit in Windows and have it as my standard editor in Total Commander, or even as a default source viewer in the browser jEdit keeps opening a new buffer window (complete with all files, file browser, etc...) each time I open a new file in this way. The only way to open a file in jEdit without causing it to open a new instance is by drag-n-drop or by using the built in file browser.

Is there any way to force jEdit to reuse its buffer and not open a new window each time? Ideas appreciated...

Cheers,
Roman

reuseview parameter

Hi Roman,

try the "reuseview" parameter.

If you use the command line with jedit.jar just enter "-reuseview" (without the quotes) after jedit.jar.

f.e.:
javaw.exe -mx128m -jar "D:\jedit\jedit.jar" -reuseview

I don't use it this way so it's untested. You might search for reuseview in this forum, there are lot of posts for it.

Hope it helps,
Lars

I agree, I use the reuseview parameter in this way.
You could create a batch file to launch jedit in this way, don't forget to insert %1 in place of the filename.
I also created some .js file, that uses Windows Scripting Host (a language whose purpose is approximately the same as for batch files), that have the advantage of not creating a new DOS window every time you perform this operation.
I can post these files on this site if it's useful for someone...
