jEdit is unbearably slow
Submitted by GCZFFL on Tuesday, 3 October, 2006 - 19:41
Newbie to jEdit here. Love what I see so far, but can't help but notice that it runs unbearably slow compared to other text editors. I'm talking about something in the realm of a two-second pause after the down arrow is pressed before the cursor moves down a line.

Using Windows XP Professional. Yes, I tried rebooting. Smiling

Ideas? Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem. Also on Windows XP pro.

I found that upgrading to the latest JDK (1.5.0-09) and then starting jEdit from my desktop shortcut (where I updated the path to the javaw.exe to point to the newest JDK) fixed the problem.

Whenever I right click on a file in Explorer and choose "open with jEdit" from the context menu, the problem is back. Everything hangs. Changing lines takes forever, the XML plugin won't validate against xsd's, marking something with your mouse takes 10's of seconds etc.

Did MS apply a patch that crippled the install? I have another Windows XP that is not affected at all. Not sure if all the latest and greatst MS service packs are installed on that system though.. Maybe the Java runtime is just different.. Is there a known issue with Java 1.5.0_07? Or 1.5.0-06?

Java 1.5.0-06 is ok.
But when starting jedit from the context menu the command to execute is read out of the registry from key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\open with jEdit\Command". You should syncronize this command with the command in the desktop shortcut.

Registry values

I had a look at the registry setting suggested above. It pointed to the Java JRE 1.5.0-06. After updating it to 1.5.0-09 everything works fine. I seem to remember that jEdit used to work with the 06 java installation previously. I have no idea what caused it to fail all of a sudden.

I don't know what I'm supposed to verify with About jEdit. All I get is a list of contributors to the source.

Thanks for your help.

could it be that, when starting with the context menu, you're using the microsoft JVM instead of the Sun's one? Verify with about->jedit...

I'll have a look at the registry when I get back at the faulty machine. Sounds plausible that the value is not correct somehow.

I'm not sure about the MS JVM..? Can jEdit even start with that JVM? I guess the registry will tell if this is the case too.

Thanks.
