Compiling/Running from within jEdit?
Submitted by vapourmle on Sunday, 10 December, 2006 - 14:47
HI there, I'm new, I have been trying jEdit, I quite like it but I have been alt+TABing between it and a console window which I do my compiling in. this is a bit awkward as I'd like to compile from within the editor, but I can't find any documentation that tells me how to do it? Are there compile/run buttons in jEdit, if so, what are they?

Also, I have never really grown to love its colourless icon scheme, are they ways of changing this, for example skins?

Vapourmle, There are plugins available for jEdit that allow you to compile from within jEdit, but most of them are language dependent. For instance, there's jCompiler which allows you compile java files. You could also use one of the ant plugins to allow you call ant scripts from within jEdit. I use this one to help compile, package and push out code.

If you're new to jEdit, and haven't done so already, I definitely recommend taking a look at the plugin manager found under "Plugins". There you can see all the plugins available for jEdit and select, download and install them.

Not sure about the skins, though this would be a neat feature I think.

Hope this helps,
Eric

Hi elberry, thanks for you helpful hints, the proverb at the foot of your email is lovely.

I will look for the plugin you mentioned and since my post I discovered the plugins system and got myself a console window, which works much like eclipse. Afterwards I realised it was a bit naive of me to think that jEdit should come with compilation tools built in. NOt very naive perhaps, but I suppose it is designed as a general purpose editor and as such, doesn't come with too many assumption about what you want to do with it.

I have also discovered there are many ways of altering jEdits sombre layout. The ocnventional way with a new icon theme, like this one:

Which can be downloaded in a thrice from here:

http://community.jedit.org/?q=taxonomy/page/or/23

It only needs to be unzipped in the right directory to work.

Or you can use a more elaborate scheme from JGoodies, which looks like this:
