getting an I/O error message
Submitted by mamboze on Wednesday, 4 July, 2007 - 11:55
I downloaded a ubuntu iso yesterday and somehow, I'm not sure how, when I start jEdit I now get an I/O error message -

The following I/O operations could not be completed
E:\downloads\ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso
There is insufficient Java heap memory to complete this request.Try increasing the maximum heap size.

Not surprising, since the iso file is about 700Mb.

But my problem is that I don't know what needs to be done to get rid of the message.

Thanks in advance

Check the activity log

Maybe jEdit is trying to open this file for some reason? I'd check the activity log (".jedit\activity.log" in your home directory, usually specified by %HOME% on Windows) for this file name to see what it is trying to do with it.

thank for the advice, I've checked out the activity.log and ubuntu file is referred to as follows:

[debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=LOAD_STARTED,view=null,source=ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso (E:\downloads\)]

[debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=CREATED,view=null,source=ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso (E:\downloads\)]

[debug] WorkThread: Running in work thread: [id=38,run=org.gjt.sp.jedit.bufferio.BufferLoadRequest[ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso (E:

[error] ErrorListDialog$ErrorEntry: E:\downloads\ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso:

I don't have any clear idea what this means. I'm just guessing here but is it possible to access the EditBus or Workthread and modify them,

How to fix this

I guess you cannot unset the option that Robert suggested, since you cannot start jEdit, but ... In the same directory as activity.log (%HOME%\.jedit), there's a file named "perspective.xml". It should contain a line like the following, which you should remove (using some other editor, since you can't start jEdit):

<BUFFER AUTORELOAD="TRUE" AUTORELOAD_DIALOG="TRUE">E:\downloads\ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso</BUFFER>

The line might be a little bit different than the above, so just look for the iso file name in that file and remove the line that contains it.

Hi,

the Activity Log does only contain messages which have been logged by jEdit components while working. There is no sense to edit it.

Like Shlomy assumed: jEdit tries to open the iso-file. Propably jEdit is "thinking" that the file has been opened at any time before and the option "Restore previously open files on startup" (Global Options->General) is enabled. Then try to disable this option.

Hi,
In my original post, I didn't make it clear that jEdit ran after clicking the I/O error dialog, sorry, an obvious noob error.

So I was able to go to Global Options->General and change the "Restore previously open files on startup" option. This got rid of the error message. And enabling it later worked out OK.

I also checked out perspective.xml after the above and there was no mention of ubuntu there. So it's all fixed.

Thanks to you both for your generous help
