Return xpath of selected xml element or attribute
Submitted by paulflory on Saturday, 29 September, 2007 - 01:05
Hi all, Is it possible to write a macro that can return the xpath of the element or attribute the cursor is located at? For example, given the following xml document, and assuming the cursor is located on the Target element, the macro would return the string: /Links/Link/Target /htdocs/images/coffee_cup.jpg I can not find this functionality in the XML plugin or elsewhere. Possible? Thanks, Paul

Will a plug-in do? http://alan.stroop.googlepages.com/XPath.jar, just download and copy to your jEdit "jars" directory. This is the initial revision, but it does what I need it to do. The resulting xpath expression is copied to the system register (clipboard). It doesn't do predicates, but may in future versions. The SideKick plug-in is required .

Great start to a plugin!

In the meantime I found a wonderful xpath utility that offers all sorts of functionality, interactively, called SketchPath.

It requires Windows and .Net, is free, and is really inspirational in its simplicity and power.

Summary
--------
SketchPath is an XPath editor and XML analysis and testing tool. It provides an integrated graphical environment for viewing XML files, developing and testing XPath expressions against them and managing the expressions in file libraries.

I'd love to see a marriage between SketchPath's and jEdit's functionalities!

Thanks,
Paul
