running 2 copies of jEdit

Hi,
Is it possible to run 2 copies of jEdit simultaneously. When I try to launch a second copy the start sequence seems to be aborted after a few seconds

I'm not sure about Your goal. But I guess that You know about the possibility to have several open views of one jEdit instance.

And I guess that Your "try to launch a second copy" is simply a try to invoke jEdit as the first time. In this case the running instance of jEdit (the so called jEdit server) is caught and the file (if given) is opened in one of the existing views, because normally the command line option -reuseview is set. Since You didn't give a filename (did You?), "the start sequence seems to be aborted...".

If You really want to start a second instance - for what reason soever - You should set the command line option -noserver.

What prompted my query was that I'm using jEdit as an editor for a Rails app tutorial I'm doing and I thought it might be convenient to have the tutorial source open at the same time as my own as a check as needed.

At any rate, I've been using split screens when necessary and they work OK.

The split pane view is a great feature, but as Robert mentioned it's very easy to have to views open at the same time.

A "view" in jEdit means the jEdit window. In the toolbar, click "View" -> "New View" and you'll get a second jEdit window. This window can be placed in any display or even on separate desktops (for you Linux users out there). The views contain the same list of files (buffers) that are open, but each view can be looking at separate files.

Try it out.

Sometimes you *do* need 2 JEdit servers

Sometimes there are perfectly valid reasons to fire up two completely separate JEdit sessions. Often times I fire up 2 different VNC sessions on the same machine. 1 session is small and fits my laptop screen for when I'm in meetings. I can't work on normal coding in a meeting because you just can't focus deeply in a meeting. The other session is for my normal work. I don't want to create 2 different views, because then the buffers get mixed together.

1. As said before: You can use the command line option "-noserver" to get an independent new instance of jEdit.

2. Furthermore, the next pre-release 4.3pre15 will have a new feature: buffersets. This means, that views could have different lists of open files, if You'd enable this option.
