I don't think you have the right Java. You need to get Sun's JDK. It looks like you're using the GNU JDK. JEdit will not work with it.

Go to java.sun.com, then the downloads section and choose the JDK 6 update 6 from the list.

Download the Linux self extracting file (not the RPM).

Run that, and install the appropriate linkages.

Then use the Java based installer for jEdit to install it.

thanks again, and I apologize for so many noob questions... but after installing the Linux self extracting file (to usr/java). I tried the following...and assume I've done something wrong.

Hmm. That's bad, wonder why there aren't instructions on running the java installer on the download page.

You don't need to run it against the Install.class.

you just do a:

java -jar jedit4.3pre14install.jar
[/code]

That should start up the installer for you.

Also, you might want to consider setting up your paths a bit differently so you don't have to type the /usr/java/...../java stuff.

I would create a JAVA_HOME environment variable which points to /usr/java/jre1.6.0_06, then append JAVA_HOME/bin to your PATH.

Thanks for the help - it's working. I first used 'easylife' http://easylife.dulinux.com to reinstall Java. Then ran your command and it worked.
