Text area display garbles but only on monitor 2
Submitted by Nick Payne on Monday, 10 November, 2008 - 20:01
I'm running a dual monitor setup using Windows Vista SP1 32-bit with a pair of 20" LCD monitors. Java version is JRE 6 update 10 and jEdit is 4.3pre15. On monitor 1 the jEdit window looks fine, but if I drag the window to monitor 2, at the point where more than 50% of the window is on monitor 2 the text area suddenly changes to show a small part of the file I am editing repeated over and over. If I drag the jEdit window back to monitor 1, as soon as more than 50% is on monitor 1 the window changes back to the correct display.

If you have a look at the screen dumps I have uploaded to http://www.users.on.net/~njpayne/stuff/monitor1.jpg and http://www.users.on.net/~njpayne/stuff/monitor2.jpg you can see what I mean.

The only plugin I've installed in addition to the default ones is LilyPondTool.

The only other Java application I use is Audiveris, and it works fine on either monitor. No other applications on the machine have any display problem on either monitor.

Unfortunately there are general problems in multi monitor environments. Users complain about very different problems again and again. But it seems very difficult to reproduce them on other machines. I guess that often could help some tuning in graphics driver settings...

I myself have been using jEdit in a dual monitor environment for years and every day and never have had any problems with that.

BTW: What does happen after reloading the buffer?

I've discovered that the problem is intermittent

If I reboot the workstation then the problem is initially gone, but after I have been using jEdit for a while it comes back. I haven't discovered what causes it to appear.

Did You play around some graphics driver settings - i.e. such as hardware acceleration?

Maybe it would be worth to find out if the problems only occur in jEdit or in Java applications generally. I remember that someone got rid of some kind of graphics problem by disabling Windows' DirectX at the command line as a Java option...

In my original post I stated that Audiveris (java app) doesn't have the same problem.

I can play with the graphics settings the next time the problem happens.

Seems to have been a Java problem

I haven't had the problem since upgrading from JRE 6u10 to 6u11, and I notice one of the things listed as fixed in 6u11 is "Fixed rendering problems with Nvidia boards on Vista".
