Memory usage in Vista
Submitted by oxk4r on Tuesday, 27 January, 2009 - 16:28
Hi, I'm new using Jedit, the best editor I've have found till now, but I have a little problem with the memory usage. Jedit (the javaw.exe process) reaches peaks of more than 175 mb of memory usage with just only one blank document opened. I first tryed it in a virtual machine with Windows Xp 32 bit and there the memory usage was more moderated (about 50 mb). Why this difference? Can I do something in Vista to reduce this ram usage? By other hand, the performance in Vista is much worst (for example when I scroll the contents in a document) than in Xp, how is this possible if it using much more resources in Vista?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Hmm. Well, is your Vista 64 bit?

Are you running it in a 64 bit JVM?

What version of Java are you running?

Well, I did'n know about the existence of a 64 bit version of Java, but after reading your response I search and installed it, now the version installed is jre-6u12 (the latest) and the memory usage is even greater than with the 32 bit version I had formerly installed, because now it reaches aprox. 222 mb of memory usage in the task manager, and the performance remains as bad as before.

K. Next, do you have any plugins installed, or is it just the base, brand new install?

Did you use the Windows installer? Or the Java installer?

If you used the Windows installer, did you leave the server option checked?

You can try changing the shortcut and add the '-noserver' option. Do this after actually exiting jEdit (File -> Exit) and ensuring jEdit is no longer running.

Can you try running jEdit directly? Navigate to the installation directory on the command line and run "java -jar jedit.jar". Do you see the same performance issues this way? If not, try running it using javaw, "javaw -jar jedit.jar".

Lastly, which version of jEdit are you running? The latest development version or the current "final" release?

I have some plugins installed. But I tried it without any plugin and the result was the same.
I used the Windows installer. But I extract it with Universal Extractor for make it semi-portable.
I tried your suggestion of add to the shortcut the -noserver parameter, and the memory usage decreased to 177 mb, but this is a huge usage yet.
With the option of navigate via cmd and execute jedit.jar the results were the same than via clicking the executable.
And regards to the Jedit version it is the last development version. I tried the stable and the ram usage was better with 113 mb, but too big yet, i think.
Pd. regards to the performance (scrolling text for example) I achieve better results in development version deselecting Options/text area/fractional font metrics.

Hmm.. K. Well, I'm out of ideas.

If you are willing, could you please bring this up in the user's mailing list?
