Submitted by Ciwan on Monday, 2 February, 2009 - 21:22
Hi guys

Can someone please tell me why the JEdit I have downloaded and installed doesn't change the colour of words such as import - if - else - private - int - boolean - public ...etc

Can someone help me with this ... PLEASE

I'd greatly appreciate any help given.

Thank You

Smiling Ok.. Are you sure that jEdit is in the correct mode? In the lower right hand corner of jEdit you should see some stuff that looks like "(text, none, UTF-8)". The first part is the mode (language) jEdit is currently using. For you it should say something like, "(java, none, UTF-8)".

If it doesn't say "java", then it's not in the correct mode, and the syntax highlighting isn't being used.

If it does say java, then I'd have to ask if you've changed, modified, or did anything to the catalog file found under ~/.jedit/modes.

For future reference please include the installation method (platform independent installer, windows, debian, etc...), and your operating system and version when posting new problems. It just helps diagnose the issue quicker. Smiling

Just after you startup jEdit you can get alot of info about your environment from jEdit's Activity log.

"Utilities" -> "Troubleshooting" -> "Activity Log".

You should see something like this at the beginning.

It's usually helpful to include the version of jEdit, and java version as well as the OS info.

Thanks elberry

You were right !! In the lower right hand corner it said (text, none, UTF-8) > So I double clicked on that, and changed it to Java mode > now it says (java, none, UTF-8) and the syntax highlighting is working !!

But another problem has appeared ! each time I press enter to move down a line ! I get the following error:

How do I solve this problem ??

Thanks elberry, you've been a great help Smiling

I think I've seen this message often with "Two Stage Save" enabled. Try to disable this option.

Hmm. That's strange. jEdit creates these "Untitled" documents to edit when you create a new file. If you have trouble editing that file, there may be a permissions issue writing files to the Program Files directory.

Are you an administrator on your machine?

Try saving the file somewhere else and then editing it.

Also, as a side note. There is a "New in Mode" (CTRL + SHIFT + N) item under the File menu. You should be able to select the language you want the new file to be in. So you can create a new Java file instead of setting the mode after wards.
