Keyboard Focus in Text Area
Submitted by ggblack on Wednesday, 18 March, 2009 - 13:14
I have just started using jedit (4.3pre16 under Mandriva Linux 2009) and I have found it so far a pleasure to use. However one aspect of its operation has proved an annoyance, and so I would like to know if this is a feature I have to live with, or that I am missing something.

I prefer to use the keyboard as much as possible, and only revert to the mouse where absolutely necessary. I find that whenever I trigger a command from a shotcut that presents an input dialog, I am left in a keyboard limbo when the dialog closes. The only way I have found to return to editing the text with the keyboard is to click into the text area with the mouse, which I would naturally prefer not to have to do, but rather find a keyboard solution. An example would be the "go to line" shortcut.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I can't reproduce this. Could You tell me other examples?
What Java version (which vendor) do jEdit use? You can see this at beginning of activity.log. If it's nut SUN Java then try to change it to SUN.

I use:
jEdit 4.3pre16
SUN Java 1.6.0_11
Windows XP SP3

Thanks for the feed back, which has led to the solution. My set up is as follows :

jEdit 4.3pre16
SUN Java 1.6.0_10
Mandriva Linux 2009

Not having a Windows box to hand I tried to reproduce the problem on an old Fedora distribution, and found like yourself that I could not reproduce it.

So was it a problem with Mandriva? To settle that question, I decided to try another window manager. I have recently settled on jwm (Joe's Window Manager), as it's a very small, lighweight manager. I tried instead icewm and found that like Fedora, the problem disappeared.

So the problem lies in jwm, which is a shame as I really liked this WM, but this is not the first glitch I have had with it and so feel I will have to switch to another.

Thanks very much for your support!

Keyboard return focus to text area

I had a similar frustration when switching between incremental search and the text area. Solution:

Global Options->Shortcuts->Go to Next Text Area

Not sure if that's the right answer, but it works.
