jEdit Community - Resources for users of the jEdit Text Editor
in Mac Snow Leopard, file not loaded into jEdit
Submitted by dushanm on Wednesday, 13 January, 2010 - 02:52
I've been using jEdit 4.3pre14 under Tiger, and it has worked fine. Very recently
I moved to Snow Leopard X.6.2, which uses Java 1.6.0_17, and installed jEdit 4.3.
It works fine except for one thing: when I 2-click on a text file (to which I've
associated jEdit.app) from any file manager - Finder, Path Finder or muCommander -
jEdit comes up, but with no file loaded. I then have to Open the desired file
separately.

Is there some setting in Preferences, or maybe in Java, that I need to configure?

Thanks for any suggestions.

file not loaded into jEdit
by dushanm on Sat, 27/02/2010 - 05:36
About a month ago I asked about the problem of jEdit not actually loading the text file that a filemanager (under Mac OS X.6.2,
Snow Leopard) was set to open in jEdit 4.3.0. Robert Schwenn
recommended looking at the mailing lists for more info.

Now I'm using jEdit 4.3.1, and it still fails to load the files.
But I haven't had any success finding relevant discussions about
this issue in the mailing lists, and am not even sure I've found
the right lists. Could somebody please point me to the correct
URL? Thanks.

Is the problem resolved?

Isn't it You who has had initiated this thread at the mailing list: http://marc.info/?l=jedit-users&m=126362385608270&w=2 ???

Please check "Utilities -> Global Options -> General -> ... including file names specified on the command line", which should be enabled, because on double-click in a file manager jEdit is invoked via command line.

Yes, it was I who initiated the thread in the forum. But a comment
of yours made me think that 'mailing lists' were somehow different
from 'Forums', and that the former contained information not found
in the latter. I may have read your comment on the developer's site,
and got thrown off, not appreciating the difference. Sorry for the
confusion.

I did as you suggested and checked into 'Utilities -> Global Options
-> General', and found that indeed the option '... including file
names specified on the command line', tho checked, was grayed out,
because 'Restore previously open files on startup' was unchecked.
So I did check the latter, and left the former also checked, hit
'Apply', then 'Okay', and quit jEdit. When I then invoked jEdit from
either of two file managers by 2-clicking a text file, jEdit again
came up with an empty window labeled 'Untitled-1'.

So that option setting doesn't seem to be the whole problem in my
case. Thanks for that suggestion, but do you have any other ideas
about what to try?

I suspect that the file managers don't let jEdit know about the double-clicked file. But I can't give You hints for troubleshooting because I don't know Mac's.

Please monitor the mailing list. I tried to revive the old discussion there.
