jEdit opens an additional window for additional files
Submitted by Nick Payne on Saturday, 30 October, 2010 - 22:05
Whenever I open an additional file once jEdit is already running, jEdit opens a additional window into which it loads the file. The new window is also slightly displaced on the screen from the previous window. However, both the new window and the previous window allow access to both the new file and any previous files I had open from the drop-down selection menu at the top of the text area. I normally close this new window, as it's not located where I want, and then use the drop-down selection at the top of the text area to bring the new file to the front, which is two extra annoying steps in the process.

How can I stop jEdit from creating a new window. Any additional files I open once jEdit is running, I want them to open in the already existing window. I've had a browse around in the various menus and global options without seeing where this can be set. I'm running jEdit 4.3.2 on Ubuntu 10.10.

ps. I should have added, this behaviour happens when I right-click on a file in Nautilus and select the "Open with jEdit" option that appears in the right-click menu after jEdit is installed. That's the behaviour I want to change. If I open a file using the jEdit File/Open dialog then it opens in the existing window.

jEdit start script

The jEdit start script which is installed by Ubuntu 10.10 differs from the ordinary one - in my opinion not very user friendly.

You should get root permissions and change the file "/usr/share/jedit/jedit.sh". Delete the content except the first 3 lines and insert these lines instead:

. /usr/lib/java-wrappers/java-wrappers.sh
find_java_runtime sun6 sun5 java6 java5
find_jars /usr/share/jedit/jedit.jar
run_java org.gjt.sp.jedit.jEdit -background -reuseview "$@"

Notes:
-reuseview is the switch You are looking for
-background means: If You closed the last jEdit view (window) via "View -> Close View" or the X-Button in title bar, then jEdit is running furthermore invisible. The next time You invoke jedit, it comes up quickly. When You chose "File -> Exit", jEdit is really closed.

Thanks. That's fixed it.

You can also simply use the Debian repository we provide, there you will always have the last stable and official release, no matter what Ubuntu decides to put in their repos. Smiling
