Linux/Fedora installation

I'm working on a Linux/Fedora machine.
I'd like to install jEdit in order to use it with the LilyPondTool plugin.
I have downloaded the jEdit installer, but have no idea what to do next.

I succeeded in installing on another computer, which I was sure it has Java fully installed.

On this new machine, I could only download the installer; "launch with Java" was not an option, so I guess the problem is there...

Hi Tosca,

You can install jEdit quite easily outside the package management system on your distribution. Download the java installer and run
java -jar jedit4.4pre1install.jar

I've run this way on Ubuntu for many releases since .deb packages haven't always been available. jEdit only depends on the JDK as far as I know. You can manage that dependency in the shell script you use to invoke jEdit (e.g. if you are running the OpenJDK and decide you want to run jEdit under the OracleJDK).

You can easily have multiple versions of jEdit installed at the same time without package management (in different directories of course). You might want to use different -settings directories if you are running different levels. I haven't had any major issue with keeping the settings on upgrade but I don't know if they work on downgrade or with two different levels accessing them at the same time.

I just tried to run the installer according to the command you gave in your answer, and got the following message:
"Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from jedit4.4pre1install.jar".

By the way, how can I be notified of the answers to this thread?
The notification settings seem to apply to all posts, or not?

My mistake: the installation didn't work because I downloaded the stable version. Once I used the correct version number in the command you provided, the installation went right.

First check whether Your Linux distribution provides a jEdit package. If not, execute the jedit installer...
