jEdit automatically reloads a changed file and presents a pop-up window whenever it gets the focus back. Now it often happens for me that a file has been changed several times before I switch back to jEdit. So I get several pop-up windows from jEdit (one after another!) which tell me that this file has been reloaded! Sometimes I get more than five windows, each one opening just when I closed the previous one. *sigh*

What I would rather like is to see a visual indicator (e.g. in the Buffer List) that a file has changed.

Additionally, all the pop-up windows (file updated, file removed, etc.) should be replaced by some logging window which can be docked somewhere...

Thanks. I managed to get jedit to manually reload a changed buffer, but I wanted this to work with out seeing a warning that a change had been made. Then I tried Log Viewer - perfect ! - tail -f in a window.

I have never used textpad but I have a feeling that what you want is already there. jEdit has an option to automatically reload buffers if they are changed on disk. This might be OK for what you need. If not then you could try the LogViewer plugin which allows you to tail a file.
