java heap memory

Hey,

I am working with some database file, just somthing over 10meg but I get the java heap memory exceeded. Jedit point me to the manual but I couldn't find where to change my java heap memory whatever it is. Where can I change that ?

This is a java issue. You can tell java how much virtual memory space to take up. See http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs61/perform/JVMTuning.html#1109778

The way you do this is different for each platform.

For the Mac see this post:

For Linux, take a look at that post, and you basically just add the same variables (-Xms64m -Xmx512m) to the command line.

I'm not sure how to do this on Windows.

Work quite fine !
If I put it to 512 will it fill up all the memory I have (and make the other software I am using unstable ?)

Yeah, if you put 512mb and don't have that much memory this could make your system run slower. However, (please someone correct me if I'm wrong) it won't use up that entire space in memory unless you have stuff to fill it up with. I sometimes look at large xml files and so I put a really high heap size max, but you can certainly put something lower. I think I remember reading somewhere on Sun's website that the default is 128mb.

Windows Heap Memory

On Windows, the memory may be in a number of places.

It may be in the jedit.bat file.

It may be in the properties of the shortcut icon in the start menu.

If you are using a jedit launcher (or if you are opening jedit through the right click menu), it may be in the registry. Use regedit, search for jedit. Eventually you'll find the entry.

Could be somewhere else I haven't found yet.

You will need to change them all if you want to be consistent.
