Fedora9 install help
Submitted by 222fbj on Tuesday, 10 June, 2008 - 22:49
I just switched from XP to a Fedora9 desktop and am not sure how to install Jedit. I got the Java version - but not sure where to go from there. The "open jdk runtime environment" is installed (first file = /usr/lib/jvm-exports/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0.x86_64).

Do I need other packages?
What command starts the installer?
- I did see this page - http://www.jedit.org/index.php?page=compatibility - but wanted to ask here before trying commands I don't understand.

thanks

You shouldn't need any other packages, but that compatibility page is more for ubuntu/debian distros. apt-get won't work on Fedora (I don't think). It's been a while since I've been on Fedora.

You want to make sure you are running the Sun Java and not the GNU java.

Other than that, just use the java based installer and you should be fine.

I think I remember a yum package for jEdit, you can try that. The command should be:
yum install jedit
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no luck. Results are below. I also saw this link in the wiki for FC3 - http://www.spindazzle.org/green/index.php?p=24 When I look for 'gcj' apps I see this...

I don't think you have the right Java. You need to get Sun's JDK. It looks like you're using the GNU JDK. JEdit will not work with it.

Go to java.sun.com, then the downloads section and choose the JDK 6 update 6 from the list.

Download the Linux self extracting file (not the RPM).

Run that, and install the appropriate linkages.

Then use the Java based installer for jEdit to install it.

thanks again, and I apologize for so many noob questions... but after installing the Linux self extracting file (to usr/java). I tried the following...and assume I've done something wrong.

[root@localhost installer]# /usr/java/jre1.6.0_06/bin/java Install.class

Hmm. That's bad, wonder why there aren't instructions on running the java installer on the download page.

You don't need to run it against the Install.class.

you just do a:
java -jar jedit4.3pre14install.jar
That should start up the installer for you.

Also, you might want to consider setting up your paths a bit differently so you don't have to type the /usr/java/...../java stuff.

I would create a JAVA_HOME environment variable which points to /usr/java/jre1.6.0_06, then append JAVA_HOME/bin to your PATH.

Thanks for the help - it's working. I first used 'easylife' http://easylife.dulinux.com to reinstall Java. Then ran your command and it worked.

For any Fedora noobs - try easylife.
