Paste location at caret instead of cursor?
Submitted by BigDub on Wednesday, 14 April, 2010 - 01:57
I am a newbie -- evaluating jedit cuz it looks like a better editor than what I have been using. Mostly I like the feature set of jedit, but one thing really bugs the heck out of me. It may be a show-stopper for me if I can't change this behavior. Specifically, when I right click and choose paste from the popup, the clipboard gets pasted at the cursor rather than the caret. I think I am using the terminology right... The caret is a stationary spot in the text area that is set by left clicking. The cursor is a dynamically changing spot which tracks mouse movement. All other editors I have ever used paste at the caret and that is the way I would like to have it work. Is there a way? A setting? A plugin? A macro?

jedit version = 4.3.1
OS = Ubuntu Karmic (9.10)

1. To be correct: It won't help You, but pasting *is* performed at the caret. When You click anywhere into the text area (right or left click), the caret is immediately moved to this position. You can check this by aborting the context menu after a right-click.

2. Most editors I know behave the same way, i.e. UltraEdit, Crimson Editor, MS Word Smiling, OpenOffice Writer, Kate (KDE).

3. There's a related feature request pending:

You could add Your "+1"...

Thanks for the education Robert. I see now what you are saying -- where the right click changes the caret location. And yes, it doesn't help me Sad. The feature DOES look applicable however and gets my vote! I wonder if there is any workaround. Maybe some way to make the cursor freeze. Unlikely, I know. Neither gedit or geany worked like this for me.

Here's the rub: Due to age and possibly some medication I take, I have a slight tremor in my hands. That means that with the subject cursor/paste behavior, the insertion point for my paste can be a bit flaky. I have accounted for a lot of this variability at work by replacing my mouse with a trackball, but I still am using a mouse at home.

I don't know a workaround, except it can be done by keyboard shotcuts of course: CTRL+V or SHIFT+INS.
I never use the mouse for copy and paste...
