Unicode weirdness on windows?

Troubleshooting
This may be a setting I need to find, but could anyone enlighten me? I can open a unicode file on Windows (little-endian, saved as an export from regedit.exe). When I save the file it seems to shift it to big-endian. This makes it incompatible with regedit for importing purposes.

Is there any way I can get jEdit to keep the endian-ness or at least tell it which way I prefer the file to be saved?

I'm using 4.2final.

Hey now, I've noticed the same glitch or a similar one.

No matter how I set things with .txt files in jEdit (in either per file via Buffer Options>Character encoding) or globally via Options>General, the output .txt file encoding seems goofed up.

Regular old windows notepad opens the jEdit files saved as UTF-16, but reports that they are encoded as Unicode BE.

Saving the file with jEdit as Unicode BE results in a file that notepad opens as d o u b l e s p a c e d and reports as ANSI encoded.

Saving the file with jEdit as Unicode LE results in a file that notepad opens normally, and reports as Unicode encoded.

I don't have any solutions to offer though...
